Steering rack advice?
I am reinstalling my steering rack after replacing my oil pan gasket and many other parts along the way. Does anyone have any advice as far as getting the u-joint onto the rack. My splines are all lined up and I have it about 1/3 of the way on and this is just a pain in my butt. I have used a screwdriver to spread the u-joint but I am still having a very hard time getting the u-joint all the way onto the rack. Any advice?

Take the bolt out???
Make sure the coupler is goning back on the same location (rotation) it came out. I've had to use a long drift to coax a reluctant coupling back onto the steering rack.

A soft metal punch. Usually brass. I have a couble of brass shafts of various diameters and lengths. 3/8" to 1/2" diameter and ten to 20 inches long. Keeps from peaning over the steel part from hitting it directly with a hard punch.
Is the rack bolted in? If it is you may have to unbolt it.

It should slide in without any problems if the U-Bolt is spread slightly with a screwdriver - misaligned?

You could use a cold chisel and brass hammer to spread coupler open. That should give you enough clearance, but it's kinda brutal and a screwdriver should be used first. Also, I usually slide the rack into the coupler before I attach any crossmember bolts. That way you can mess with the alignment of the rack.
While you're down there, bench press the car a couple of times!
