How much do you trust your 944?

My dad's Volvo has 220k on it, yet he said once that he'd only check the oil and trust it to drive uneventfully to California if he felt like it. We live in CT.

How far from home would you trust your P-car, right now? Assume you could do simple things before driving out, like change the oil if needed, maybe a T-belt adjustment, fix loose odds and ends, etc. Let's say you can also have a spare DME relay in the car.

I just want to see exactly what kind of trust we'd put in our cars, right now.

For me, my car has about 3k left on it before it needs a belt replacement, so I might not trust it cross-country. But in 12k miles of my driving, it's only had a dead battery (lights left on, my bad) and 2 blown radiator hoses (and all are a year old or less now). Comments?

Oh, I forgot: For Pelican guys outside the US, please feel free to write in a distance.

I would be comfortable driving 500 miles round trip, right now. ALthough... the battery is dead right now, so I'd need to recharge, but that would give me time to tension the t-belt and change oil.

Since doing my waterpump, I have checked the tension every three weeks. I'm freakin' insane about that now.

I said in-state, but I am taking it up to Lake Geneva this weekend (southern Wisconsin), assuming I get my new power-window relay before then.

Id trust it within maybe 100 miles of my home right now.

Im due for my timing belt job...next week im going to work on changing everything. After that, i give it about 1500 miles before i need a retension, then atleast another 40k miles.

But honestly, id trust this car to go cross country with a couple spare quarts of oil.

The only problem i have ever had with a 944 series car was in my 924S. The upper radiator hose split and was leaking all over the place (one very messy and sweet smelling engine bay). All this while i was 100 miles from home in college. A little duct tape and i was fine for another 1000 miles before i ordered a new hose. Changed both upper and lower hoses in the school parking lot...that was a fun time .

I also had a slow oil leak over the exhaust header, turned out my rear cam seal was missing two of the three bolts. I thought it was leaking...inspected it to find the damn thing was hanging on by one bolt. Beats the hell out of me how that happened. I made atleast 3, 100 mile trips back and fourth to home with the car like that.

So far in the 944...no problems to speak of. Knock on wood of course!

Pittsburgh to Montreal in the "S" every June for the last several years. Its my annual pilgrimmage to the F1 Canadian GP which is a 12+ hour trip one way. The car never missed a beat and I'm gonna keep doing it for years to come.............

I would drive it for long distance for special events like a meet but otherwise I'd rider drive around town, not a question of thrust but a question of trying to keep it longer.

Philippe.

PS. Panzer909 did you see the Porsche exhibit on your F1 week end to Montreal, some of those are nice.

currently: around town - Busted Transaxle / transmission

Before that : cross country

I used to drive 300-400 miles DAILY for a commute plus work territory, with ZERO concerns.

Well I would have to say that I trust my car as much as I can because I have driven from CA to NY/MA and back and in 2 weeks I am gonna do it all over again. my last trip with all its side trips was 4000 miles. This one will only be around 2700. Im betting on 3 days and thats with visiting a 968 to test drive. Did I mention that I love my 944?

I trust it a whole lot actually...

drove it up to NH and all the way down to Stoughton/Avon, will probably do a Maine trip soon.

It's not the most comfortable way of doing so but it sure is fun.

and I drive it to work everyday, in rush hour traffic, out at night to bars/clubs.. everything.

I've never had any P-car leave me stranded. Not even the 'teener. I've yet to own a car that I didn't trust for a cross-country trip.

The issue is whether or not the car trusts me! I can only imagine what it thinks when I approach it with a wrench in hand, gleam in my eye and then take it out on the highway afterwards to ride it hard. So to speak...
