Rear seat backs

As one of those, "eh, why the hell not" kinds of things, I removed the meserchmitt's rear seatbacks yesterday on a lark.

Honestly, I think it looks a lot better... and besides, that thing was fairly heavy. With the sunscreen roller attached, I would guess it weighed a good 20-25 pounds. Consider it a step toward my 944 RS dream .

Has anyone actually weighed one of these things?

i took out my back seats too....it may disrupt that 50/50 weight distrubution, but yay for weight reduction. bad thing is, when going over 60 with windows open, the back carpet will fly up and down...gets kinda annoying

there are little metal squares about every 3 inches or so along the rim of the carpet. I secured the carpet onto these with double-sided tape. Seems to be holding the carpet down so far.

As for weight distribution, I think my upcoming AC delete will take care of that...

i took out the back seats and the carpeting.....but then i resprayed everything with an underbody rubber coating.......it smelled for a couple days, but it's very clean and quiet and useful if ever transporting anything......

I just weighed the one out of my car earlier this week. 18.5lbs on a certified 150lbs capacity postal scale.

haha Studey Lark, huh? never heard of one. Ugly ****** car. Didn't Porsche secretly design a bunch of Studebaker's cars (hence the mysteriously-missing 500-800 number series)?

Is that with or without the sunscreen roller?

Good question, without. I threw that in the bin 5 years ago, so I can't weigh it for you. So 20lbs easy. Probably as high as 25 like you wrote originally. Something else to add to the list of weight removed from my car

I kind of think the Lark looks like an old MB 300 series.

Thing is that now you have to make sure any cargo is secure. The backseat would make a halfway decent barrier between a flying object and the back of the front seats. You definitely can't carry the top in the back without the storage bag.

IMO, having the backseat looks better. The 944 looks kind of like an aerodynamic El Camino without them upright. I've even used the backseats when really necessary.

You're right. Cargo hauling is impacted somewhat In fact that is the only thing that keeps me from getting rid of the seat back altogether. Ultimately though I will eventually eliminate the seat bottom again and carpet the whole thing like the 924GTS or like some of the 968CS.

I don't think I've ever used the rear of my car to haul anything other than the sunroof... for that... well, I will have to be creative...

I believe the 2+2 configuration was a way for many car companies to change the way the insurance industry looked at certain models.

Actually, I had driven around when I first got the car with my sister in the front seat and our neighbor in the back seat. I think that only worked because our neighbor, who I later dated for a year, was only 5' tall.

I made the mistake of removing both the rear seats and the passenger seat so that I could carry tons of large copier parts for the huge Xerox machines.

needless to say, it all ended up in the front..

I later got a net that was tight across the back.

Priorities??

In full disclosure, I can lose enough LBS to offset the savings of the rear seat... how do you support any cargo forward of the rear axles without the seatback??

You don't. That is why I don't carry much around in my car anymore.

My two children love the back seat. Of course, they both weigh under 45lbs. So I guess my weight savings plan will have to come via the tread mill.

If this neighbor is over 18, I'm going to need to know location, age, and a few photographs...

Removing the rear seat backs does not delete the use of the rear seat. The seats are still there, there just isn't much back or head support...

Ha-ha, trust me you don't want to date her unless you are really into emotionally needy brats.

I think she is about 39 now.
