944 Window Problem - Help!
Hi all;
I have an 86 944 NA with a peculiar window problem: The passenger side window will go down, but will not go up. Drivers side motor works normally in both directions. I've checked the voltage at the motor connection leads and read -12 and +12 WITHOUT the motor connected. With the motor connected I seem to get -12 for down and about 0.5 for the up mode. I know the switches to be good and the motor is fine (replaced it already as a possible cause), this issue occurs when using either passenger switch (Driver side or Passenger side). Prior to this I had the similar problem of the window going up sparadically (as mentioned in other forums). The only thing I havn't tried replacing yet is the relay. What else can I try to solve this? Thanks in advance for any advice. |
Thanks for the Tip. And go figure, you end up trying everything but the most obvious, and what do you find? Well some very corroded contacts within the switches. Guess I was wrong, the switch was the problem.
Well, I've learned a lot about how to pull apart the door, and remove the window and regulator. So, if there are any questions about that later, just let me know. I've pulled all the switches to give them all a thorough cleaning with some sandpaper, and already tried one to be sure. It worked after being cleaned, go figure. One thing to pass on from this ... when opening the switches, beware of 2 small ball-bearings within the switch (they're not easy to find if you're not prepared for them). Putting it back together will take some patients as you get everything re-aligned. ok, time for bed!!! |
How is your timing belt?
|
Timing Belt? Should be fine. I had that changed a few years ago when I purchased the car and had it tuned and the engine resealed.
Why, what were thinking about? |
SoCal is very concerned about timing belts; that's all. The engine, being interference and poorly designed re: easy belt service, tends to self destruct when the timing belt fails. The result is very expensive to repair.

Two years or 30,000 miles.
An owners dedication to routine maintence will indicate what state the car is in as well as give an indication of their mechanical awareness. |
Well in that case I'd say it was 3 yrs and about 5,000 KM since that was changed. Last year the cost of Insurance was a big issue so the car was off the road for the whole year (so does that year still count???). I finnally got the insurance all worked out this year and got the car back on the road last month.
So, I've been updating various parts this summer and tracking down the odd gremlin. Right now, next on the list is a thorough washing! The only thing I know that doesn't work at all is the A/C. And I may have to start a new thread for this, but the headlight washer jets are arranged to apray across the bumper. yah, thats right, turned 90 degrees from the headlight. I've already tried to rotate the jet back in line, but to no avail. Any ideas on fixing this aside from an outright replacement? |
That's for squirting cadillacs going 20 mph below the speed limit.
|
Yes the year sitting counts as two. Non circulating belts take a set. When they are run again this "set" will fracture the belt backing/web. Sometimes to the point of failure within several hours of running again. Best to replace the timing belt. At $30 it's cheap insurance.
I use a large safety pin point to turn and direct the squirters. If they are stuck you can take them off and soak them in bathroom cleaner for water residue build up. If that doesn't work then replace them. |
Cool, thanks for the tips. I'll have the belt checked out for the sake of safety.
