Unhappy Side mirror glass removal Help!

Does any body know how to remove the glass from the side mirror? I was waxing my 87 944 last night when I swung the mirror forward out of the way of the buffer. The spring that holds the mirror head on to the mount pulled out of the head. Now the head is hanging by the wires. [img]
If I can get the mirror apart maby I can fix the spring. Thanks

The mirror body is held to the post by a hex head screw, IIRC. You need to remove the glass from the mirror first. Tilt the glass all the way forward at the top. Push a flat head screw driver into the notch on top of the retaining ring for the mirror. It should slide (you might have to try pushing it both directions) releasing the mirror. Now you can see the inside of the mirror assembly. Remove the motors and brackets. You should be able to see that the mirror body actually bolts to a smaller side piece. Unbolt that, and you should be able to reassemble the whole thing by bolting the small piece to the mirror post. It's very tricky to get the spring compressed and set the screw.

My driver side pulled apart the same way. The upper/lower parts are held together with a large hollow bolt (wiring goes thru it) and a spring to keep it under tension. When I took it apart to fix, I found the threads had stripped from the upper part. I found a good used mirror and replaced it.

Opps.......your right, I screwed up that link insert! Oh well, ya know it came from Clark's garage, and ya found it anyway.

Dave, you don't OWE me a beer, but I'll sure be glad to sit down with over 1...or 2...or ? LOL

I really could stand for a good run with my car too. Right now, I've got contractors working on my house and keeping me a little pre-occupied with their issues, and such. We'll get it together sometime soon I hope!
