Lets play "follow the green wire" on my bros 83 944

The green wire off of the Negative side of the coil... every single connection, split, junction, when it physically passes through the firewall, and where it terminates.

Cranks all day long, no fire.

And most importantly: Grounding.

Ive read through a lot of the threads with the same symptoms:

Ran great, then blam! sluggish and stranded on the roadside.

Checked EVERYTHING! Swapped out every component. Timing perfect.

Further discussion with my friend after consulting this forum, we agree its definately a wiring issue, considering we have ruled out everything else via testing procedures found both here and in the manual. I believe there is a ground somewhere that isnt grounded and not completing the circuit, like some component contact coil isnt being energized etc etc.

I'm a "bolt that sucker on and lets see what it will do now" kinda guy with a lot of time working on VW engines, not a big wire-head electronic wiz.

I know the concept of point to point connectivity TS which we are trying now, my friend is outside right now waiting for me to come back... ugh, I worked all day too!

Ok, we know the Neg side of the coil goes to the tach, alarm, and the DME... What we are having problems with is following the exact path from the coil to the fuse/relay cluster under the dash.

Visuals (pictures) would be a great help, a flow chart of the ignition system would be even better, but a bone of any size thrown would be killer.

My bro is a staunch "do it your selfer" and will not take it to an expert garage. To him, thats cheating and a serious breech of protocol.

I just wanna get it running... he has 2 '83 944's. His "Dueling Porsches" and Im driver number 2.

Thanks,

Ken -Armona CA

IIRC, the green wire from the coil goes up to the 9 pin connector located just above the brake booster. Check this connector for corrosion/breaks/connectivity. From there, I believe it chases down into the car to # 1 pin position in the DME connector. I've had bad connections/splices at both sites. I'm not 100% sure if I have the right deal here, but it sounds familiar anyway. Also make sure the ignition switch is working. See Clark's garage index for good help here.

Look under "engine" for starting and running troubleshooter, and under "ignition" for more help.

Good luck!

Have you checked the DME relay?
