Help me So Cal!!

ok timing belt snapped, valves hit pistons, needs to be machined.
heres my question..each dish of the pistons has two 4mm gouges on them;so can i get new valves and have the head machined and put everything back together or do i have to get a new engine?

Just repair the head (new guides, valves machine surface flat) and , replace the belts, rollers, water pump and front seals, change the oil cooler seals while the head is off.
Retension the belts after 2000-2500 miles and then every 15,000 miles (during the maintenance service)

.... to add to that........

I would sand/grind those gouges in order to take off any sharp edges. Its more of an issue on a turbo where you can generate some hot spots....

It may be cheaper to find a used head if you are on a budget.

But if you want to do it the right way. Brit has your answer.

Ok. This mechanic-guy at Eibell performance told me that those gouges arent too good. I asked whats the worst that could happen? It'll detonate. Detonate? Like a bomb? Yea like a bomb, he says. Oh man! what kind of a work is detonate? He mentioned something about hot spots on the dishes of the pistons. Is this guy right at all? I really dont wanna drive a time bomb! lol

Is this the same guy who wants to sell you a set of pistons?

My previous owner blew a timing belt and didn't change the pistons. I have had the car three years and no kaboom.
YMMV

"Detonate" means the same thing as "knock" or "ping". And yes, of there are very rough places it could create a small hot spot and lead to knock.

This is what ae1969 was talking about when he said to sand or grind the gouges to remove any sharp edges. As long as you do that, you won't have to worry about detonation.

And if this mechanic wouldn't take the time to explain what he meant by detonate, I wouldn't be taking my car to him. Good mechanic or not, he doesn't seem interested in being entirely forthright just based on what you've said.

Hmmm...very good points made. Ok ill keep the engine. Now, how do I, and with what tools do I grind the Pistons with? And how deep can I grind without causeing harm?

thank you everyone for all your input!

Check with one of the others on that one. I'm only about 90% certain that the answer I'd give would be right so I don't want to give it.
