For anybody with an aftermarket cat...
I have a crappy Midas cat that the first owner installed on my car. It's nowhere near the size of the 944 cat, it was welded on, the outlet pipe doesn't fit snug against the tailpipe, etc...
I picked up a good used OEM 944 manifold and cat assembly, because I don't feel the need to invest in a new converter just yet, and I don't want to go researching performance cats. Seeing as how I have to pull the head, (and it was burning coolant) it's an ideal time to change the cat. Right now, it doesn't sound as aggressive as other 944s I've heard, and I attribute it to the cat being a bit small and possibly restricted. It's also a bit boomy when climbing a hill. Will a change affect the exhaust tone? I really like the engine note, particularly the hint of belt whine. Sometimes I feel like the exhaust takes away from it, rather than complementing it. |

why not just have a straight pipe fabricated to replace the cat?

Other 944's probably sound more boomy because after 20 years the cats are empty.

The straight pipe would get me in trouble. When I brought it in for emissions, the man checked with a mirror for the cat. He had a hard time finding it, until I told him it ran down the middle of the car. At that point, I assume he just pretended to find it; he didn't look too hard.
Plus, it failed emissions for CO. I don't know if I need to make it worse, though having the engine not burn coolant might go a long way towards that goal. At any rate, $30 for used headers and a cat isn't too bad. I also have to decide on whether I want to keep my early iron headers, or install the lighter steel ones in that supposedly crack. |

The reason why the stock 944 cat is big is beacuse only half of it is the cat the other half is a resinator, all the after market ones are small cus its just the cat. Thats also the reason why it might sound a little different. Also u should first fix any problems you have (like burning coolant) before you go to emission, This way it would be alot easier to trouble shoot the CO problem. Also since u have been burning coolant I would replace the plugs and the 02 sensor
