1&4 bellows manifold question

This is cross-posted, as the turbo folks seem quiet over there...

Got the crossover pipe and manifolds off the other day after a long and exciting two days of nut wrangling and vise-gripping, and noticed the 1&4 manifold has a bit of a wiggle where the bellows are welded in -
is this normal? It sounds like there is a pipe with a bit of play underneath - other
than that, everything looks solid as can be.

Also - which way do the new exhaust gaskets get installed -
all-metal side to block or to manifold?

Any tricks to getting the exhaust hardware in general
properly torqued? Can't figure out for the life of me how I might
get a damn torque wrench on any of those puppies.

Thanks.

The "wiggle" is normal. The bellows was added to the 1-4 header to allow for theremal expansion and prevent cracks.

The exhaust gaskets go in with the metal side towards the header.

Getting the exhaust hardware and the headers installed can be a real PITA. When I did the head on my 951 I put the headers in the engine bay first and then set the studs in by hand. For the 1-4 header I had to use a breaker bar to pry the #4 header flange in place because the bolt holes were about 1/4" off. There was no way I could get the headers in with the studs in the head. BTW: Install the header to CAT pipe gaskets and hardware BEFORE you start to tighten the header up!

I did not use a torque wrench. Once I got the studs, nuts and washers installed, I tightened the nuts is steps, alternating studs so as to pull the headers to the head nice and even. Sort of like torquing lug nuts or head nuts.

When I had the exhaust hardware snug but not completely tight (this included the header to CAT pipe/cross over pipe hardware) I started the engine and let the exhaust plumbing heat up. Once the plumbing was "hot" I gave the hardware a final tightening.
