Question Retrofitting Turbo brakes to an '84 NA?

What would be involved in retrofitting a set of 951/S2 brake calipers to an '84 NA car? Thanks!

It can be done but you will have to change out some of the parts (more than just disks and calipers). Someone more knowledgeable than me will post a parts list for you.

The stock brakes on the 1984 944 are pretty good.

There's a pretty recent thread about this, I think it was CJF's post about upgrading brakes. Anyway... there seems to be a lot more to it than you'd think. That $750 bolt-on caliper upgrade is looking really good to me...

Struts, spindles, hubs, rotors... basically replacing the entire front suspension assembly.

The consensus seems to be that the best upgrade for 944 brakes is the Wilwood/Rennbay 4-piston caliper bolt-in set.

Thanks guys, that's exactly what I needed to know. I'm buying an '84 944 in the next couple of weeks and plan on making it a track car that will be driven on the street as well.

What is wrong with your 911T that makes it so cheap?

Bingo, it's a roller. It's a solid car but needs a drivetrain and other work.

You may want to try the brakes before you do any upgrading, I can almost dislocate my eyeballs with my stock brakes.

Scott makes a good point. Try changing the a more aggressive pad before switching the brakes.

If you can lock the wheels up at speed, your brakes are more than adequete for the car. Unless your doing serious track duty with your car, the stock brakes (Assuming they are in good working order) are more than adequete. But i can understand wanting those 4-piston's from Rennbay...hell i am tempted to purchase them and the most my car see's is autocross.

Thanks for the advice guys, I think that's what I'll do, probably switch to a quality crossdrilled rotor and more aggressive pads for track use only.

so conversley, going to a turbo or turbo-compatible suspension on a 944 would require turbo or turbo-compatible brakes, hubs, rotors?

not necessarily... you can get turbo struts without changing the assembly, non?

I don't know, I'm still learning this stuff too.

If anyone is intersted in doing the conversion on a 84 or 83, I have a set of front spindles, bubs, and decent rotors from a 86 951 for sale.

Won't there be speedometer issues? IIRC, early 944's pickup at the front brake, late 944's at the tranny. I don't believe the turbos (all with the late speedo design) are equipped to measure the car's speed upfront.

That is a good point. The speedo cable sticks through the dust cover on the front left hub and roates with it. I doubt the turbo hubs have the same hole to stick the cable through.

Hey-

Why upgrade the brakes? What you really need is to bolt on a turbo for mad track speeds.
