A little good news

Well I have been fighting this cutting out problem for a long time. First I thought it might be the speed and Ref sensors. I bought used off of ebay and I could only get 1 out of the bracket, so I only replaced one. I think that helped but not sure. Then I noticed that if it cut out and I hit the computer under the passenger floorboards it generally (90%) came back.

Finally got around to opening it up and re-soldering all the connections. I have never really soldered before but it turns out its not too hard if you have someone around who knows how to show you how its done.

Its gotten a hell of a lot better but unfortunately hasn't entirely solved the problem. I guess my next step is to borrow a working DME and see if that totally solves it.

The good news is whereas before I could go about 100 miles with 1-2 cut outs, now I can go 500 miles with 1-2 cut outs.

Also I got some new tires on the front (yoko avs es100) and they feel nice. previously I had mismatched sizes front to back and the understeer was quite noticeable. Feels much better now.

Yeah my dad replaced that computer twice when he drove my car before he gave it to me. Is that the DME control unit (CU)? I never really asked him much about the function of it, but I know it caused my car a lot of problems in the past. The car runs fine since he replaced it the last time about 5 years ago, but before that it would cut out all the time.

Have you tried replacing the DME relay?

Have you cleaned/checked the reference and speed sensor plug connections?

yeah I have replaced the DME relay twice and I am confident its not that.

At one point the ref sensor came loose at the connector and my car wouldnt start. That took me a day to figure out. The spring clip? that holds it together is broken so it looked like it was connected but it was not. I now have that zip tied closed and I believe the connection itself is not an issue, but the sensor still could be. Unfortunately the broken side is the side that goes to the DME so I don't know how easy it is to replace.
