O2 sensor test

Went to the link and downloaded the specs and instructions for testing the O2 sensor. I have two of the symptoms. a/bad gas mileage (270 miles per tank) and b/ Almost always smell gas fumes. Couple questions. 1/ The CO test tube cap- is this an open tube to the exhaust/ will a bad cap affect the sensor? and 2/ Has anyone any feedback on the universal type sensor.
I'm going to go through the tset to verify it works? I saw the use propane to see if it sensor rich fuel mixture. Can you use any gas? Don't have a can of propane handy. Comes in the big BBQ type container.

Having the CO test tube cap missing will definitely effect your readings. It'll let more oxygen in, making the car think its always running a bit lean. which means you'll use more gas.

The bosch universal sensors should work fine as long as you wire them correctly. I've never done the O2 sensor test, so I can't comment on that.

hey paul... check the easy thing first - if you smell gas, lift the carpet in the back and on the passenger side you'll see a black rubber cap that is about 3 or 4 inches in diameter... make sure that's securely in place.
here's a pic...

Looked last night at the drain hoses. Hard as rock but don't appear to be broken or cracked. Smell gas in the little compartment behind the rear tire. Will be looking again this weekend.
