Angry Idiot Totaled my 944!!!!

This afternoon, wensday july 23, I am out w/ my dad going to pick up my pay check of all things. I am in the left hand lane trying to make a left turn waiting for traffic to clear w/ my blinker on. I had been there for about 50 seconds. Then out of nowhere I hear tired sqealing and I look in my mirror the next thing I know a red jeep cheeroke is all the way into my 944. I was thankful that I didn't have a weapon in the car or else they would have had a homicide on their hands. Well the thing that makes me so terribly mad is the guy laughed about it. His car was fine. My back end in about where the rear seats are, totally piled up. Well the car would still drive so we took it home. and we will see what happens from here. I need all of the advice I can get. I am 16 and this is really hard for me because I may not be able to get another 944 for a long time. That car was my pride and Joy. Why are there freaking *******s like that?? But seriously I need to know everything like fair market values, should I part it out?, what to do about finding another one, how to handle the whole situation? i am totally new to this of course and I need alot of help. Its a terrible day, I feel like a part oof me has died I will be back in a porsche as soon as possible though, I hope!

i heard a story about a guy who's 944 rolled down a mountain and the car was crumpled into nothing but he came out without a bruise.

sorry to hear about that. i understand what you mean, when i got in my wreck i felt like i just killed my dog or something.
damn SUV's sucks too cause even though it was his fault entirely your insurance might try to jack up your premium. did you have collision or do you know what kind of money his insurance company may give you?

Hey macfreak i know exactly how you feel.

First things first, you're alright. Second, you were able to get the car home.

Now, i'd say get with insurance. was fault placed on him or you? Also try to get as much as you can from insurance, as they'll try to give you the least amount possible. They might want the title on the car if they're paying you out, or they may let you keep it.

If you decide to keep it, strip it to the bone. That engine is worth a hefty bit (ask SoCal Driver for more details). If you get some friends and booze over, you can have that thing taken down in a weekend. You should be able to recover at least $900 out of parts alone, not to mention insurance cash will help you get into that next 944.

Good luck, be safe, and ESPECIALLY be glad you weren't hurt.

Really sorry to hear about the car… absent minded SUV drivers seem to always find the best car in an intersection to plow through. I just got through dealing with my totaled car a week ago and here’s what I learned.
  • Were there any witnesses? If so make sure you get their info. Insurance companies do not argue as much if a plaintiff has witnesses stating their innocence.
  • Since you were hit from behind while stopped, I assume it was his fault. As long as you can provide police reports or witness testimonials showing no personal fault, the only person you’ll have to deal with is his claim rep.
  • When they come out to look at the car, they WILL total it due to its low blue book value (~$2400). Most claim reps are cool and will discuss what you think the car was worth. Here’s where you must prove its real worth. Do you have receipts for the variety of tasty mods tangled within the wreckage? If so great, if not get a list going of all the separate parts involved and their associated street value. The goal here is to provide a solid explanation of what you think the car is worth. Now don’t be a jackarse at this point… no, “my solobaric subwoofer shot out of my windshield during the collision and was never recovered”.

Be straight and honest with the Jeeps insurance rep and most likely they will give you what you deserve. If, however, they say “tough luck here’s two grand”, don’t accept it right away. I think you can call your insurance company and have them bully the other insurance company for more money.

After the cash settlement is dealt with, be aware you can recoup your losses by parting out the car. In short they will deduct the salvage value of the car from your settlement and hand the car over to you. At this point you can strip her down and sell your goodies to us (what size Fuchs?). Stripping, storing, and disposing of a totaled car is not easy and often not worth the reward.

This is how it happened in my case, it might be totally different in yours. Good luck, loosing a loved one is hard!

Man, I'm really sorry to hear that. Thankfully you're not hurt. The assclown laughed about it? That pisses ME off immensly. I can only imagine how you felt...After driving around here, I have come to the conclusion that KY drivers rank right up there with the worst in the world.

Some excellent advice is above. I would probably try and part it out if I were you. Good luck man.

SO what was his excuse? why did he hit you?

I'm sure insurance will give you enough $$ to buy another one (?) I know of a nice 924S near me for sale for $3900... only 97K miles.

Yes, these cars are definitely SAFE. don't forget, every porsche is born a race car, and race cars need to be SAFE. When I got in my accident last year, even though i had grazed a telephone pole, there was hardly any jarring in the car itself... the car simply "bounced" off and into the street... if i was a blind passenger I might not have even known we'd hit something! This was a situation in which a lesser car would have given me whiplash...

Sorry about your accident MacFreak. I was absolutely devastated after mine, so i know how it feels.

His excuse was that the driver in front of him moved out of the way and there I was and He couldn't get over, so he tried to stop but couldn't in time. What BS! it is questionable if he was on his cell phone.

The really impressive thing was the glass from the rear hatch still worked right, it buble and cracked w/ ut making sharp edges so even though I was covered in glass it didn't cut me.

When I flipped my '86 and completely totalled it, I thought insurance was going to screw me but they ended up giving me $1800 above what I paid for the car. Although my current 944 isn't as immaculately clean as my last one was, I still recovered. Over the winter, without having a 944, I learned that's it's just a car and there are plenty of them out there. At first when I wrecked my car, I though "Damn, I killed my car and that was my hobby and my pride and joy" Then I learned to realize that it's just a car and I could have been killed. Now I have my second 944 and I value the car but it's still just a car. I baby it and wash it at least once a week but if it gets wrecked, it gets wrecked. I was cocky with my first one because it was a Porsche but with my second one I think of it as any other car that's nice. It's my car, I paid for it, and it sucked to lose the first one but it was a very good learning experience for me. I feel like I just wrote a book about love and loss. Just my experience with wrecks...

I didn't read anything about a police report. If you did not have the police at the scene, you have made a mistake. Did they investigate and charge the idiot SUV driver in the Jeep? You have made a big mistake if you did not get them involved.
