Cam Seal Removal
I'm in the midst of my yearly maintenance. I have a small leak at the cam seal and am getting a little oil in the distributor. New seal is coming next week.
Thus far I have the cam tower off and the troublesome triple square 10 mm bolt out. Pulley and dog are off as well as woodruff key. The cam tower is off as its gasket was leaking and is being replaced. Question is how do I get the cam seal out. Should I pry it out or remove the rear housing and push it out?

Prying will work but you run the risk of gouging the housing. Knocking it out from inside the housing will work well.

It was easy to carefully pry out. No damage to housing. I noticed that I do not have an o-ring on the ID of the spacer. The OD of the spacer is what the seal contacts.

I would pull the back cover off as well and replace that seal. It is only cork and tends to leak so it falls under the "while you have it apart" catagory. Also how are your lifters holding up? If they sound like a sewing machine on crack it may also be a good time to replace them. I kicked myself for not replacing mine while I did my seal. So now they are on my winter repair list. mmmm new lifters

Occasionally I'll get the lifter tapping sound when I start the car. I noticed that the gasket between the head and cam tower was broken and was rubbing on #2 lifter inside the tower. It had ripped away from the bolt holes. That is where the engine was leaking oil.
I'll think about the lifters.
