Bird in the rear!!!!

you probably read the subject and wondered "wtf??"

ok... for those who have been following my sound issues going on in the rear of the car, all the clicking, rubbing, etc.. sounds have gone away... now i am left with a whole new sound back there.... it sounds like i've got a bird back there!

it's a pulsing squeak, high pitched, that occurs whenever i put my foot on the gas.... that goes away when i take my foot off the gas... i've noticed it goes away when i floor it.. so there's that period in between that i get the squeak....

the squeak frequency varies directly with the *speed* of the car (not how much gas i give it)... and happens only when i put my foot on the gas...

any thoughts? bearing? dry CV joint? budgie?

you sure it isn't the rear hatch? it's possible that the squeak is related to vibrations...

You know what they say...

A bird in the rear is better than crabs on an organ.

Seriously...following up on what CJFusco said, it could be your transmission mounts. They've gone, and the tranny is tranferring a lot of vibration to the frame...making other parts noisey.

If it is the same sound....

Here is the cause / fix.

Along the top of the hatch (near the hinges), the glue inside, from the factory, dissolves over time and the metal housing scrapes the window with every minor flex of the car. Most annoying!!!

Here is a good test. Take a small piece of paper / thin cardboard and wedge it between the glass and the metal trim. Drive around. See if this stops the noise. Look all around the edge for any motion (pressing down on the glass as you search.

I had to pry the frame open and squeeze in some winshield epoxy. Problem solved.

the hatch, glass, and all trim pieces are suck on and firm.. no jiggling...

it really sounds like it's coming from the rear of the car, underneath..

One useful bit of info - when the car is squeaking like mad, if i'm at speed and do a hard left or right bend in the road, the squeak goes away until i straighten out the wheel....

also, the frequency of the "chirp" varies directly with the speed the tires are spinning at (not how much gas i give).

any thoughts / ideas?

Brakes? Maybe the emergency brake assembly is loose?

Jack up the rear and spin the wheels.

my emergency brake doesn't work... pads are shot.. but that crossed my mind.

the squeak only happens at 40+ kph... so i'll never spin the wheels that fast with the car lifted.

I was just saying to a friend of mine yesterday how fun it'd be to be a vallet... she said that i wouldn't be able to do anything "fun" with the cars.... My response? "Haven't you ever seen Ferris Bueller's Day Off?"

what would be the symptoms of a dry/bad cv joint? I've got a haynes and the procedure of removal and re-grease looks really straightforward..... but i dont wanna do it if it wouldn't send out the high pitched pulsing squeak that i hear...

It could be a squeeking throw-out bearing.

They're known for chirping. Try gently pressing the clutch just a teeny bit when you hear the chirping. If it goes away, you know it 's the TO bearing.

If it's a Chirp not a squawk then its the Sealent that hold the Backglass to the Metal. Usualy you can see it pulling away on the top part by hinges where it connects to the roof of the car. Cost me about 100$ to have mine professionaly sealed. Oh, and make sure you take pictures of backglass make sure they dont leav deep sctrach markes like they did on mine ( had them buff it out its ok now )

That type of chatter went away when I bought new back tires. Go figure, maybe there was resonance from the old tires hitting the road.

hey FR, your wheel bearing idea is quite sound, however, if that was the case the squeak would go away with my foot on the brakes, would it not?

I thought of that already, so on the highway doing about 60mph, I *gently* put force on the brakes (foot still on the accelerator) until i felt resistance from the car and the squeak persisted.... no effect, just the slowing of the car slowed down the squeaking.

I shall do the CV's when i get a free afternoon..

ad AA, thanks for the info about the rear glass, however, as previously stated the sound is very distinct - coming from the rear of the car, lower than the driver's side window... the sound is not heard *in* the car (except for the noise coming from the outside), so this would lead me away from it being the rear hatch / glass.... well, that, and like i already said - i inspected all that.

Can anyone else confirm that the Throw-out bearing will stop squeaking when i lightly depress the clutch?

alright...
if i depress the clutch while the squeak is happening - the squeak goes away.. but i have to do more than press it slightly..

tried hitting the brakes a bit while driving - no luck again..

now occasionally the squeak turns into a loud squeal... it's getting worse.

it's amazing.. on a technical forum, the post about a sub setup gets more than a post like this...

anyone else have *any* input whatsoever?
