s2 motor in 924s
Has anyone any experience with this upgrade, and if so how much trouble , in street and in track only IE no air no heat etc
car . and is it worth the trouble ? Would leave stock except for chip intake and exhaust to run vintage and track days on pump gas or make sleeper out of street 924s , would have to be aware of torque tube , is a change of torque tube needed or will the stock 924s 944 work? Thanks for info , Jesse |

I would buy an S2 instead of fitting a 924 with the motor...you would have to redo every thing especially the brakes....or I would any ways.... Because I own both a S2 and a early model 944 and they are completely different in every way..... By time you upgrade a 924 with all the new wiring and suspension and stuff you could by a rough S2 for track and be alot happier and with a lot less headache.

Hey New Driver,
I'm just finished such a swap. I put a 968 in a 924S. Definitely, past the edge of my patients and knowledge. But this is the stuff that builds character and legends! Keep plenty of beer on hand. The Engine part was plug and play for the most part. Everything will line up fine. You'll need the DME with the S2. You'll need to get/modify your fuel supply lines (at least the return in engine compartment). You'll need to spice up a new 14 pin (2x7) pin wire connector where you currently have a 9 pin (3x3), (Driver side firewall Engine interface EFI and instruments) probably new radiator, Mounting Oil cooler by Power Steering serpentine. But the good news is that your Torque tube, Tranny, and CV's should be good for 250 HP and can stay! I think you should also try to get the Exhaust manifold and down pipe to Y-Pipe then do a custom exhaust from 02 sensor. Your's are different. 2.5" will work but 3" is sweet. Read up here as the 968 swap should be about the same. http://www.944s3.com/944S3/ http://home.earthlink.net/~bryangunn/main944page/id4.html You'll have to decide if it's worth it, but it's definitely doable. I'd think in the $5K and 100 hr labor range. Of course that includes things like new belts, clutch, water pump and probably some suspension work while it's all out. I hope to do a full write up on my swap soon. Till then, I'd be happy to share as others have helped me. PS. Anytime everyone tells ya something is not worth it makes it, that much better when you do; and they go wooow! Cool!

You could buy a good 968 for what I put in. And the man hours! No rational person would ever build such a creature for profit. (enters the Irrational man)

Burn the fire.

Yeah, but the weight savings and ærodynamics are what make the swap worthwhile... Shave maybe 200lbs with the body alone... Then scrap the interior and VOILA 2000-2200lbs of car to own the track with

along this vein, could i buy an S2 motor that broke a belt/ cam chain and rebuild the head myself? unless a lot of machine work needed to be done it seems like that might be the best way to get a motor for transplant and keep the prices low.

swap
Thinking about putting it in track car, already have headers and custom exhaust, the exhaust will probably work , it is three inch , but the msd headers will be different? Car has suspension done already , the orginal 88 motor runs good but running on racing gas is kinda expensive , thinking about good torque and power on street gas for vintage racing., and just fun track days. Sadly with fiberglass hood , lexan hatch lexan windshield and fiberglass doors and racing seat only can get car down to 2250 with no gas in fuel cell and no driver , we add , the gas and I over 200 more lbs. can run in vintage with steel and glass and easiily make weight . WE usually work on cars a lot more than we drive them anyway , be nice to have a plain Jane 924s sleeper. Jesse

Daaang Jesse,
You should start a weight watcher program for Porsches! 2250 is a darn skinny gal! I think that's equivalent to about 5 Hp gain /-100 lbs at that weight. I think mine started around 2700 and I figure I'm down about 150 lbs. The 968 is stock around 3100++lbs. Plain Jane will have some butt kicking punch. The S2 engine cost maybe $2500 around 210 stock HP or 968 $3500 around 240 stock HP. Since your doing the same work if you got the bucks? More power = more FUN. Either will be great thoe. Sounds like you got most of the exhaust covered; I'm not positive about this, but I think the 968 and S2 have a different header flanges than other 944's/924's. Against the block it uses a crush ring gasket rather than the larger flat copper type. And I think where they mate header to Down Pipe & Down Pipe to Y pipe have a different more oval flange pattern. Also I heard that the Down pipe (4 to 2 pipe) had the twist reversed to fit around that big 3 Liter block from others. But as I said not sure on the S2. Ebay's where I got my Engine. Wish I could tear down a head on the 16V. www.lindseyracing.com has rebuilt heads for the 944's for around $500 with exchange. (not sure about s2) Well I guess I could take it down but the back together with proper springs tension and all, would scare me. I'm more electrical. Saw link from some else, but can't vouch for Junk yards http://www.20thstreetauto.com/porscheparts.htm#944 http://www.911pcar.com/Porsche_Parts/porsche_parts_lights.htm Also something like DC Motors a lot on Ebay. Happy hunting
