944 NA Auto to >> 944 NA LSD manual

Hey,
After watching some neitherland owned porsche's, 944 NA 83 with LSD and manual gearbox plus s2 front bumper with 924 turbo front air split, F2 (the driver or nickname of the car) showed what a 944 can really be pushed to do.

Now thinking of it would it be worth changing the transmisson in my 86 NA Auto to a 944 turbo LSD transmisson. Would it effect performance that much? eg. slow it down??

I have the money to do the transmisson change and if I got through with the change I will start to strip the car to a performance street car, eg. carbon fibre bonnet (to be made), carbon sunroof, carbo spoiler, carbon head lamp covers etc. As they say less weight more power!!

So let me know what you think and if its worth it or should i just change the trans to a stock 944 manual trans.

Thanks

A Turbo transmission will slow your car down defenetley. I dont remember the specifics, but the gearing is much taller compared to a regular 944.

I would look around for a LSD tranny for any n/a car. They do exist, one was on eBay and sold for about $350 a few weeks ago. However that one was being sold in the US.

Yeah I never thought of that, I talked to my porsche mechanics about the neitherland orgin car, and he said he had fitted a turbo trans and lsd, and oil cooler in for $500 but costing $3000 for the parts. He said that the take offs in the car were very quick but the torque and the maxium end performance was lost. He said that the only thing it would work well with is a S or S2 engine.

So what should I do? If there was a way of getting a lsd but not slowly the car down that would be great. Whats the ideas????

Well, you can swap in the 951 LSD into the 944 box - I'm running one in my 924 box, for that matter. You just have to have a trans guy put it in and shim it up properly, but if you can get the parts cheaper that way, why not?

LSDs were offered in N/As. find a 5 speed LSD N/A box and swap that in. Best of both worlds, traction and gearing.

Yeah but how hard is it to find a NA 5speed LSD gearbox. And it is much harder buying a lsd on its own from the 951 and yeah. But I emailed my porsche mechanic late last night and asked him what he thinks is the best option. Well for $5000 he can get a 951 trans an lsd and fit for 3500 or he can fit a 944 na trans without lsd for 2000. But i will see what he thinks about the 944 na trans with lsd r fit a 951 lsd to the 944 trans. Plus I'm getting my suspension change to koni suspension and struts front and back.

www.car-part.com has 944S LSD transmissions listed for as low as $1000. they have the same gearing as a 944NA but the stronger R&P I believe. Final drive ratio on the S/ NA transmission is 3.9, turbo is 3.33.

The big issue with buying a LSD unit for him is the fact hes located in the Down Under. So shipping aynthign from the states would probably be an arm and a leg.

An option you have is to use a aftermarket LSD. I know alot of the 944 Turbo guys use a Quailfe (spelling?) and a GT-Racing differential. I dont know much about them, but this seems like a nice option considering how much it seems it would cost to put a Turbo LSD into your car.

That is just one place that sellls those LSD units, you can find alot more information about them in the 944 Turbo section of the Rennlist forums if you search around.

Shameless plug: Our new line of Chromoly 951 Track LSDs are now available with a choice of two different locking percentage packages:
40/60 // 40/40 // 80/80 // 60/40 // 20/30 // 30/20 or
50/80 // 40/40 // 80/80 // 80/50 // 25/40 // 40/25
So, while the traditional 40% is still available, every diff offers the optional 80% or one of the two new "sportier" assymetrical ramps. And we still carry lightened torque-biasing 944 diffs for street autocross.

If I could find a manual trans and lsd for the NA, respectiveley a S trans for around 1500-2000 then that will mean 200 duty 220 gst and say 500 to send. Thats max 3G for the trans and lsd then 500 to fit. That would be nice. Then strip the rear seats out add carbon fibre and so forth. Not worth doing a air filter kit.???
