Cold NO Start FIX

Last night my starter wouldnt do anything as if it was frozen. I ended up trying to bump start it in reverse. Although that didnt make it start right away because of a lack of speed, it made the starter unfreeze (or something). I think its the same case with that old technique using a hammer to bang your starter and then it starts right up again. Any ideas why this starter just didnt turn over?

Garage
Crappy connection of the positive cable(s) at the battery. Comes from using aftermarket terminals.
