Hey Guys,
haven't been around this forum in awhile. Got the Race Bug and the Car slowly devolved back to a bare nuckle Time Trial Racer. Pictures really made her look a little better than real. But Recently I got a 944Spec Racecar! So may bring 924S3 back to streets and Ralley racing out here in SoCal.

So with the 968 Tranny Swap.
First would be MUCH Easier to do a S2 Tranny. Has all the hard points (early Ear type mount), shift pattern, and should bolt up alot easier and cheaper!!!!!

If you want the 6speed.
I finally ended up cutting out the Hard rear crossmember and then stuck Long bolts through the Tub frame (ie drilled) and then had to use a late 944T Gas Tank. (968 won't fit, to wide, 924S won't fit around Newer Crossmember)
924S/early tanks from differently over the rear crossmember than lates with the Bolt up Cross member (that I drilled and mounted up)
Never worked out the Sender Difference, so gas gage did not work.
Anyway guys... Big PITA. Rear end little issues like mounting a fuel pump and previous; took up much more time than 968 Engine Swap. So Be Warned.
I can shoot up some pictures of some of that latter.
Still love the that you guys are making the Best of the Best outta them.

I am swapping a 968 engine into 87 944S sure could use some tips on the wiring ...

stv951 02-19-2014 12:57 PM

any more of these ?

sf1 02-19-2014 03:46 PM

Outstanding. I was daydreaming about doing this to my 924S just the other day...

edredas 02-19-2014 06:25 PM

This was exactly what I had in mind when I started thinking about swaps for my 924S. I must have read this thread a thousand times. At the time, I figured the 968 engine would be easier and more reliable than a 951 swap. However, I ended up choosing the 951 engine anyway, because I knew that I would eventually want more power.

So glad this old thread got bumped. I have a 968 tranny and torque tube in the basement, waiting to go in the 86 951. I know most would rather keep the 951 tranny, but mine is an open diff, so it had to go, and the deal on the 968 tranny was too good to pass up.

speedysprocket 02-19-2014 08:45 PM

Did you make sure the good deal 968 transmission has a good pinion bearing...? Suggest you check out 968forum.com and search transmission pinion bearing. Also, torque tube has nothing to do with the transmission. 968 varies from 944 at the bell housing.
And I finished my 968 swap into an 87 944S last month...

924S tub has the mounting points for late crossmember and tank straps if you carefully cut away the early crossmember:

Hey edredas,
Can you explain what you mean: you stuck with the 951 engine because you wanted more power? 951 and 968 have about same power don't they?

On a 951 you can increase the boost level and therefore make more power. On a 968, it isn't that easy.

edredas 02-20-2014 10:50 AM

George, currently, my engine is 100% stock, so I am making less power than a 968, but as Fiat mentioned, it is much cheaper and easier to get more power out of the 951 engine.

Rasta Monsta 02-20-2014 10:54 AM

Well the first 50 horse are cheap, anyway. The next 50 can be quite expensive.

True, true. Though doing the same with the 968 for the same money is nearly impossible.

Though a turbocharged 3.0L would be pretty awesome!

Whenever I see or hear of someone swapping a V8 into a 968 I ask myself "why?", it is such a great powerplant! This thread makes me feel good all over. Nice job!!!

:DReviving this thread for an old friend of mine ...OK 944...it's a 924S /968 swap, but believe that will help him out.
