I'm sure mine will be the exception here, but when my 87 ran rough at a cold idle, I found the fuel pressure regulator was leaking gas into the vacuum line that ran straight into the intake which made it run a really rich mixture. After it warmed up, the engine could burn the excess gas without too much of a problem but when cold and at an idle it was pretty rough. I found it by accident by removing the j boot after I just started it and seen the gas running straight into the butterfly assembly just after the car was shut off. I have a new pressure regulator on order and that should fix that problem. I just bought this car, so I don't know for sure how long it's been doing it, but the j boot was disfigured and cracked on the bottom from the gasoline running in there and sitting in the j boot so it's been like that for a while.

As far as the RPM thing, I read somewhere (I think the owner's manual) that the engine shouldn't be run under 1500 rpm's so I never put mine below that. If it falls below that, I change gears.
