Engine from 1987 924S to 1987 944 NA ?
Hi everyone !!! The first thing I want to say is that this forum is such a great pleace for me ! I love you all for your help.
The second thing is : Today I've found a 1987 Porsche 924S on a junkyard and it has an engine/ gearbox/ clutch and the tranny in a good condition as I can tell by observing it all from all sides/ shifting it to gears. Also I tried to turn the engine manually, and it was rotating like it is supposed to. My question is : Is it possible and is it worth it to replace my leaking engine in 944 to the one on 924 S. Also I am wondering if it is possible to replace the transmission to the one from 924S because my transmission broke(possibly ring and pinion) as stated here : Downshifted. Broke something. Sh**t If so, how do I remove the transmission ? Maybe anyone has got some pictures or links ? Thank you very much guys, your help is very important to me and my lovely 944. God bless you all. |

The transaxles are different. The 924S transaxle uses a different mounting method to attach to the car and it lacks the speed sensor that the '85.5+ 944 needs. The 924S gets its speed reading from the front left wheel, whereas '85.5+ 944s get their speed reading from the transaxle output shaft. The 924S transaxle will not even have a mounting point for the speed sensor. You could theoretically rig something up, but it will definitely not be a simple bolt-in.
As far as the engine goes, it should be pretty much bolt-up IIRC. Aaron

Better check that transmission. Think it may have the mounting for the on-trans speedo sensor but it's plugged. As to how it mounts into your 87 944 it should be adapatable. If the engine in the 87 944 is ok just get the 924S engine as a spare. Depending on what is left on the 924S you may want to pull the AFS and DME and fuse/relay block. Get the radiator too if possible.

thanks for your replies.
Okay, does anybody know about compatibility of the following parts : transmission's ring and pinion clutch gearbox oil cooler/ oil pressure sensor oil pan seal on the back of the balance shaft maybe some other parts that cause failures like oil leaks and transmission failures. Also, if you need body parts like doors/ back windshield/ bumpers or radiator/seats (seats are black and almost in perfect condition and it says PORSCHE all over them, kinda neat) from that 87 924S and if you live around the crossing of 15 and 60 freeways / San Bernardino county, I can tell you where that car is, so you can pick up some parts from it. Thanks for your time. Last edited by msurguy; 01-16-2006 at 12:52 AM.. |

The oil pan on my '87 924S was a little different than the one on my '87 944. It did not have the upgraded oil pickup, meaning the circular looking piece on the cooling fins.
Other than that, i do not know much else about your questions.

I know that oil cooler and oil pump are the same on those cars. What other parts can fit from 87 924 S into 87 944 NA ? I'm interested in gearbox, engine parts and transmission. Thank you

Gearbox is the same as transmission. Actually it's a transaxle. Has both the differential and gearbox in it. Have to use the entire unit. Not possible/practical to swap parts.
Is the car in one of the pick-a-part type junkyards?

yeah it is on a pick-a-part junkyard.
What about the speed sensor that is on the top of the 944 transmission? Does the 924S tranny have a hole for the speed sensor ? How will i dteremine the speed if I will swap the transmission from 924S into 944 ? Last edited by msurguy; 01-17-2006 at 08:49 AM.. |
