If when cranking the engine it sounds more like a sewing machine you broke your timing belt.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

How did you determine that? Many belts will strip the teeth and still can be wraped around the pulleys.

How did you determine you have no spark? Seldom does the coil fail on these cars. It's usually the ignition switch as it powers the coil directly. The DME relay is the second item to fail. The reference sensor follows a close third.

You need to add your model and year to your signiture line so the rest of us don't have to guess.

Basic Testing Procedure

With the key on check for voltage at the coil and at one of the plugs to the injectors.

If there is no voltage to the coil it's your ignition switch.

If there is voltage to the coil but not to the injectors it's the DME relay.

If there is votage to both pull the cable off of the first spark plug, stick a spare plug in and lay the spark plug on the intake manifold so it is grounded. Crank the car and check that there is spark. No spark is an indicator that the reference sensor is not sensoring. Can be the HV cable between the coil and the dist cap. Can be a broken OR STRIPPED timing belt as the dist rotor is on the end of the cam. Yes it can also be a bad coil. Check the resistance across the coil terminals. From term 1 to 15 you should get 0.4 to 0.6 ohms. From term 1 to 4 you should get 5.0 to 7.2 K ohms.

The reference sensor can be out of adjustment. Larger clearences can result in poor running and even spontanious stopping. Correct clearence is 0.8mm or about 1/32".

The fuel pump runs when the engine is cranking and when the engine is running. You can hear the fuel pump run for a bit after you stop cranking. It's behind the passenger side rear tire. It does NOT run with just the key on.

I can help ONLY IF you follow the testing plan and report back on each step. Otherwise you are just throwing parts at it.
