Age. Mileage. Too Tight. Manufacturing defect.
When was it last replaced?

What was changed when the belt was done and did a Porsche repair shop, a "we do European cars shop" or the owner carry out the repairs? what caused the failure? Was it retensioned after 2000-2500 miles?
They rarely break without a mechanical failure of the tensioners, water pump or incorrect assembly. For any answers way more information is required.

i'm betting you didn't retension the belts after 2000 miles.
if you did, how many miles was driven since then? as brit said, who did the work? was it a brand new belt 9 months ago? or just a simple retension?

what documentation do you have that tells you it was done 9 months ago then? is it just the previous owners word?

A t-belt will last about 30,000 miles or a bit over two years. If the belt was tensioned wrong when last installed such as too tight it will seperate as the webing is stretched from a hot expanded engine. If it's too loose and there is no metal fence on the water pump it can slap and hit itself on the water pump pulley and tear off teeth.
It is strongly suggested that when one aquires a "new" 944 that the timing and balance belts be replaced when there is a question as to when they were last replaced. It's cheaper that replacing eight valves.

well, when i did mine, at feb, 2004, as noted on the fluid container with magic marker, i did not know that you should not push "TRIP RESET" while car is in motion. oops!!
it ads excitement to driving it when you keep the mileage in your head!! ![]()

Gee Snap, you crack me up. Hopefully you changed it since Feb 2004. They make new gears for that you know and they aren't that hard to change. Don't ask me how I know!
