CR-1 Radio -- Lights on... Nobody Home!

The CR-1 radio in my 968 is acting up. The power will go on, the unit will light up, but nothing will show on the screen and the buttons will not function.

It isn't a matter of the punching in the code as the word CODE doesn't even show.

I searched this forum and found an old post (from 2000) with the exact same problem... but no answers! Any ideas?

Cure:
1. remove radio
2. install new radio
3. smile

That would be a good idea if I could:
1. find an aftermarket unit that isn't so much of a video game that it is actually readable!
2. find one that had writing of the size that 47-year-old eyes could actually read them in the dark
3. find one that will run my aftermarket Alpine CD changer.

I just spent the afternoon at stereo places looking at other units and am not encouraged.

Go to Crutchfield.com and look at the ones that are available. As they don't list a 968, look up either 89-93 911 (964) or 1991 944. Then it will plug into the factory harness. As far as the CD changer, how old is it anyway? Might be time to buy new and have a matched set.

The original radio you have is an Alpine.
