Need thread: 944S engine into 944
I'm buying a 944S motor from one of the members of this board.
THANK YOU pelicaners! My question is, I have a 1988 NA which will take the 1987 944S motor. I'm getting everything with the 'S' motor from the exhaust headers to the airbox. How tough is this swap. Does anyone know of a thread or maybe a URL or a HOWTO for this swap? Thanks in advance! |
Since I don't know for certain... Look at what it will cost for the DME harness/engine harness and an S DME.

I'm getting the DME and harness with the 'S' motor.
Thanks! |
No different than swapping my 951 parts into my NA.......... OOOOPSS.... Did I say that out loud.
Pretty straight forward...... Drop Tranny... Drop engine... Insert engine Insert Tranny Start the car. You should not have any issues with those two. |
Don't forget the ignition module. Hope the air filter will fit under the front.

I took an extra 944S engine and dropped in to a S2 with a blown engine. Was not just a drop, install and go. But was not bad and can be done.
Main things where wiring. You'll need the 100% COMPLETE wiring harnesses and DME swapped out. The "S" also has an extra little ignition module box (no spark without it). It normally mounts in front of the cruise control motor. The S uses the same radiator as standard 944, so you'll be fine there - I had re-fab mine a bit with some spacers since the S2 rad was bigger. The airbox will clear the hood fine. You'll need to mount the airbox so make sure they include the 2 brackets - the S2 shell had the treaded holes in place already - not sure on a standard 944 (look at where the hood hold down latch is, on the passengers side you should see 2 threaded holes not in use - if not, you'll need the drill and tap some. The other one was wiring the RPM guage. The S might be same as the stanadard 944? The S2 was not - but I did find online reference on how to re-wire it. No biggie. All was easy - just time consuming doing all the re-wiring. Let me know if you need any of the wiring cross reference stuff and I'll e-mail tham to you. Saved me a ton of time and scratching my head. Also, I would check/or replace the clutch and do a complete belt job while the motor is out. Would save some money down the road and you would know the correct time to replace them. New engine mounts maybe. Also check the cam chain tensioner, they are known to fail in the S and S2. I hear you can just buy the plastic piece now for around $40 (the part that fails) rather than the whole assembly ($300+) |
Dont forget to check the cam chain tensioner, I belive the service interval is about 100,000 miles. If you are doing all the work on the install you should replace the tensioner, chain and J tube. Those "S" head's arent cheap.

Guys, thanks for the info. I'm sure I'll be calling upon you all again when I get the motor in my garage.
GREAT board! |
