I'm about to set my car on fire

because now that I can drive it again after like five months (body shop and various mechanics) I had it in my posession for maybe 12 hours before I dropped it off back at the shop again. I failed my @#$#$% emissions test and I would like to have it checked out, as AFAIK everything is in good shape.

I have a nasty suspicion, however, that it is actually the aftermarket chip that the PO installed... after all, it passed its previous emissions test, BEFORE he started f'ing with it... anyone got a stock chip for an '88 NA, 5-speed? pleeeeease? PO said he was going to give it to me but I know he's lost it.

Hey im up in baltimore or down in leonardtown depending on weather or not im at school, you can borrow the DME out of my 87 944 to get past the test. It'll be a good test to make sure the things works anyway. Let me know and it can be arranged

I'm just going to let the shop take care of it, let them figure out whether it's the chip or something else. So I can't get the numbers off the DME because I don't have it in my posession at the moment. In any case I would like to have the stock chip as every now and then when the car gets good and hot, full throttle will make it completely freak out, lots of black smoke and some detonation, not good (and embarassing too) and I'd like to rule it out as a possible cause. I was told it's an Autothority chip and from what I'm told from some of the Volkswagen people, they don't have the greatest rep for chips that work...

They were just barely over the limit on both HC and CO, both at idle and 2500 RPM. It was well under the last time it was inspected 2 yrs. ago however. Anyway the guy called me today and said that my spark plugs had a huge gap (that I don't understand, they weren't that old) also my fuel filter was full of crap (don't understand that either, it's 1.5 yrs. old and the tank is plastic?) and finally that my O2 sensor was way lazy (I do believe that, I have no record of it ever being replaced.) He's going to replace all those things and try it on his own sniffer and then let me know if there's still a problem.

Make it stop, make it stop, make the cash bleeding stop. I have probably put at least $1800 into this car in deductibles, extra bodywork, and the whole CV joint fiasco since it was wrecked - I just want a car I can drive, is that too much to ask? And I was so good to it, I have fed it nothing but the finest synthetic oil; I gave it a timing belt service, a new radiator, good headlights, good dash lights, fixed the power seat (which broke again) and was going to replace its alternator cooling duct when this s**tstorm happened... SIX MONTHS AGO...

if it sat for 6 months, that would explain the crap in the fuel filter.
