Does rust spread?
I'm still trying to decide if I am going to save my 944 or not.
There are a few small spots (stone chips) where the paint has been chipped and there is some surface rust. Since the body is galvanized, will the rust not be able to spread, or does that not matter and it'll just keep reproducing. |
Re: Does rust spread?
Stone chips are easy. Take some medium or fine sandpaper and hit it. Then dab Wurth rust stop primer on it, and finish with touch-up paint.
It won't start rotting or severly rusting, but it can slowly spread. Mine has chips that are 2 years old and I have every intention of getting them taken care of this summer. They haven't gotten worse in that 2 year span, though. |
Re: Does rust spread?
Your REALLY, just kidding.......right?
Its a CANCER! |
Rust never sleeps.

The entire car is supposed to be galvinized so it doesn't rust...I have just a small rock chip. Sorry if it wasn't obvious to me that it now no longer matters if the rest coating hasn't been comprimised because the rust will spread anyway. At least that's the assumption I'd take away from your reply. |
If a panel is breached, galvanizing won't help it. SoCal isn't kidding.

Now I'm all worried...only one way to find out how far it spread. Oh God..:o  :( |
the sooner ya get to it, the sooner you'll STOP it.
The rust WILL spread UNDER the galvanized coating on the body, if left unchecked. |
So, if the chips happened 3 or 4 years ago....Can you give an estimate on how much it could have spread?
::sigh:: |
spots that you are talking about i highly doubt have spread much further than the chip itself. (yes, it can, but since you are talking about surface rust, i doubt it)
when i repainted my car, i had a spot on the roof where the paint was chipped and there was some surface rust. a light do-over with my DA sander took care of it pretty quick. for bigger spots (like holes and such), the only way to get rid of it is to actually cut it out. post a pic if you can. but dont worry about yours spreading much further than the chip. but since galvanized is only a process that covers the outside of the metal, after that coating is penetrated (being keyed, or stones etc. etc.) you can leave a spot suspect to rust, and spreading. |
seeing is you are talking about stone chips I would guess the hood has the chips. If this is the case fix the stone chips as described above, If it does get worse buy a new hood.
Rust sucks |
Rusting on a galvanized body doesn't spread and much as it penetrates. This is seen in the holes below the battery. Although the acid from a sweating battery does help. There are a few places where the body does seem to rust out. These are under the fenders close the the doors at the top.
Proper treatment then painting will take care of most of it. |
Where are you located?
|
Outside of Chicago.
Can any recommend a good book for learning how to prep a car for paint? |
haynes has an autobody book. Its not too bad. Or go to the library.
