What is wrong with my speedo

Alright, this has happened about 3 times now. When I am driivng to work in the morning my speedometer makes a little jump at constat speed and makes a tsk tsk tsk noise as it does it. It happened this mornging about about a month ago and i think one other time. I'm just curious if anyone know's what it is.

If you have an early 944 the speedometer cable is probably binding. It pokes out under the dust cap on the left from wheel.

Ok. If it is binding, how do I fix it? That's what I thought it might be. I have some **** that stops working when it get's cold, i.e the clock and the passengers side door handle.

Best to just get a replacement cable.

For the short term you may be able to force some lube down it by removing the end at the spindle (easier than at the speedo), squirting some liquid graphite into it then forcing it back up the housing with some compressed air. Actually better to do this at the speedo end as gravity will draw it back down inside the housing.

When you do get a replacement cable you need to tie a strong line to the end of the old speedo cable before you pull it back through the fire wall. Tie the end of the line to the new speedo cable. Use the line to pull/direct the new speedo cable through the fire wall. Should be a clip on the end of the cable where it comes through the grease cap on the hub. A bit of putty will keep the water out of the bearings.

It may be the cable. I had this same problem (intermittent tick, tick and the needle bounce) a few years ago. It kept getting worse till it became constant. In my case a replacement cable made no difference. I ended up getting an ebay speedo that worked fine till the odo gear broke. I decided to let the VDO shop in Milwaukee fix/refurbish it. When I told the guy that I had two and described the problem(s) with both he said that the one with the tick/bounce would cost "much more to repair" than the one with the broken gear. Just my $0.02.. YMMV

Hmm. Well I guess I'll hold onto my 924 parts car speedo just in case.

My car has the same problem too, only when climbing hills in fact...no idea why not everywhere else!!

Well I guess my problem is fixed. I removed my gauge cluster this weekend to replace some burned out lights. I had to move the speedometer cable around to get it out. No I have no jumping or anything with the needle. Weird. Saved me some $$.
