MPG 27.5-30mpg....good?

Yesterday I drove 227 miles one-way to pick up a used decklid (yes, it fits handily in the back of my 928 trunk, even lays flat if you put it in sideways).

MGP using cheapest low octane gas going was a whopping 30.02 mpg. Coming back, same distance, same road, using cruise control as well, I only got 27.5 mpg....and the deck lid didn't weigh all that much. Different brand of gas but still lowest octane they sell around here. Very slight downhill on first run but hardly noticeable. I don't mind the overall MPG but am a bit confused by the variation. Only variable that I noticed was gas from 7/11 vs. a Stinker station.

For a stocker 968 (or 944) is this OK mileage? Can't imagine that it would be better with high-octane gas. No knocking.

Yes good mileage. I am jealous

any chance you were driving into a little bit of wind on the return trip?

Tervuren 02-28-2006 08:33 AM

Lots of factors, overall altitude change, wind direction and speed while traveling, traffic, driving style, etc...

For me, I live down in a hole in the ground, so I almost always get better return then outgoing miles per gallon.

If you're getting anywhere near 30 mpg, you are not driving the car hard enough.

That's about what I see with my 5 sp as well. Sometimes it's hard to figure out but one thing they have been publishing around here is the gas pumps are not accurate with the amount of gas being put into the cars. Some stations the gas pump will say it put in 10 gallons and it really only put in 9. I figure my gas mileage off of the pump gallon reading and so it's no wonder I have a hard time with that.

I usually get about 27.5 on my '87 S. I drive it to work everyday which is an 80 mile round trip, ~about 1/3 freeway, 1/3 country roads, 1/3 stop and go traffic.
It does have a few HP goodies...
Also the speedometer reads a little faster than I'm actually going, so my actual mileage is probably a little lower.

I got about a 32MPG average with driving on some of my state's country roads, that included passing slow cars, and tons of hills/curves. Thing is, the speed limit on the road is much higher then I normaly drive, at over 55MPH, my car starts to get optimum consumption per mile, pretty well stays there to 70MPH, and never driven on roads with more then a 70MPH speed limit, so I'm not sure of the point where it the consumption/mile goes down significantly.

That is good... Were you driving your 928 or your 968? I get roughly 30-35, low 20s when I stomp it.

hughett 02-28-2006 01:04 PM

I was driving the 968...cruise control on 99% of the time, relatively flat slighly rolling hills...not many curves...speed limit 60 half the way...70mph the rest of the way. My 928 gets 21-22 mpg.

When I drive agressively it gets worse mileage but I'm still breaking in a new set of belts, rollers, etc. so I'm taking it easy.

Just got a B&B muffler. Can't wait to put it on.
