Odometer and Timing Belt Kit Questions

I just bought an '87 944 with 90k miles that has lots of "to dos": The first are these two:

1. The odometer quit on my way home but the speedometer works fine. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot/ resolve this?

2. I have no idea when or if the timing belt has ever been changed. Should I open it up and do just the belt if everything looks ok, or should I do an entire timing belt kit?

Thanks!

if you don't know about the belt and rollers, change them all. it'll save you heartache in the future. also, change the water pump. this can kill your belt and valves as well. ask me how i know...

Hank, I'm going with nynor on this one...change everything and you may even want to reseal the engine while you are there. just a thought. As far as the odometer...I'm 99.9 percent sure that if you pull the instrument cluster and remove the speedometer from the cluster you will find a little plastic gear on the back and it will be broken. You can pick one up anywhere but I choose to support Pelican because they support us but they are on ebay as well. I think they are in the 12 to 15 dollar range. That's very common for these cars. There is also a web site that has a lot of good information on it that someone here showed me...check it out.

There are a couple items specific to the 87 944 in there. Good luck with the new toy.

Odo & Timing Belt

Thanks Gents.

Doing the Kit seems to be the consensus, except for the water pump. Some P-Car guys have said "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I think I will open her up and do the timing belt kit for sure, but see how new things look as far as the rest of it goes. The PO said it had been done before, but was not sure exactly when, or what etc.

I've found complete kits at other sites, but don't see one here on pelican. Like you all, I'd prefer to support Pelican but I'm not sure what exactly I need to order individually to make up the whole "kit". Does anyone have a parts list?

Odometer: Still need help

I pulled the instrument cluster and pulled the Speedometer out. I found the little worm gear attached to a small electric motor(?). I was able to easily turn the worm gear and the odometer/ trip odometer both functioned normally. Now I'm going to put her back together; unless I just freed something up, I don't think I found the problem.

water pump. you are in there. its not broken, but it will be. when it does, you may be replacing valves as well. cheap insurance.
