Okay, so I recently blew the head-gasket on my '87 951... I was leaving work and went to start and engine make two compressions and then locked, (hydro-lock). Initially, I thought it was the timing-belt, as it had been rattling and earlier that day, the car was missing at idle, (timing was off?). So I trailered it home and removed timing-belt cover, plugs, etc. and rotated engine with wrench to find anti-freeze flowing from #4.
![]() Okay fine, I'll send it to the machine shop... (Note: head was rebuilt exactly 30,000 miles ago) my mechanic called me and informed me that the guides looked far more worn than would be expected for 30,000 miles... okay, got new guides. Finally, he called me the night before last to inform me that the machine shop found two bent exhaust valves. ![]() So I guess my question is... if the gasket was blown on #4 and that was where the hydro-lock was, (and I did look down and all except for #4 were dry) how on earth could it have bent two exhaust valves? Also, my mechanic told me that sometimes because the sleeves and block are dissimilar metals, the sleeves drop quite often on the turbos... is this prevalent? Has anyone experienced this problem? Anyone else care to rant about their 944?

Is it possible for the force of the hydro lock to have stopped the crank from turning, but to have had the belt skip a few teeth? That would be my only thought on the bent valves.

Hmm, I dont THINK so, when I set the engine to TDC for dis-assembly, the cam wheel lined up with the timing mark on the housing. Also, the car was running on three cylinders after I cleared the other of anti-freeze and pulled plug... could it have run with a two bent ex. valves? I am just wondering if the machine shop accidentally bent them. Also, after I had the timing belt done, a rattling noise appeared in the belt-housing at idle when cold, could that have anything to do with it?

if you pulled the plug on 4, and the bent valves were on 4, it would have still ran, but would have just run like *****. if it was on another cylinder, it would have had no compression on 2 cylinders (one with bent valves, and one with the plug pulled) meaning it would have been running basically on 2. Did you hear any tapping afterwards that would have been the valves or was it compleatly new news that you had bent valves.

Nope, no tapping at all, and it was def. running on three cylinders (rather loudly of course with the plug removed). It was also supposively on two exhaust valves and therefore on different cylinders, so it makes no sense to me that the other should have bent and that the car would run on three cylinders. I am wondering if the machine shop bent them.
