Vinyl Repair Kit for Cracked Dash

I was at the auto parts store the other day and saw a kit for vinyl dash repair..had microballons, pigment/adhesive, and a small heat tool...sounds like what I have heard are the right materials to actually work..the kit was $14

Has anyone ever tried this? Boy it would be hard to experiment since your whole dash is in plain view.....

Tried the miracle vinyl repair kit on a tiny tear on my boat seat, I followed the directions to a tea. My advise, save your money, live with the small crack or get the dash cover kit if it really bothers you, good luck.

My brother got one of those repair kits a while back but I don't remember what car it was for. The color didn't match well enough and the little pattern tool that they give you was difficult to use without messing up the filler. He eventually gave up and he doesn't give up easily.
I say just save up and buy a new dash or get a cover. The previous owner of my car sold me mine with a custom cloth dash cover that fits perfectly.

I have tried to use one of these, with no luck.
I have seen a number of others try, also with no luck.
I don't know why they are still on the market.
I'm with Kevin0323 on this one, Save your money.

i have a dash top (black plastic) that moulds to the dash.... follows the lines of the car beautifully and looks great. not like factory, but a heck of a lot better than the cracks.

I have dash cover. It looks a hundred times better than the dry lake bed that it covers. Unless you knew what you were looking for you wouldn't even notice it was a cover. It is not a match for the grain or color, but it was worth the $100 or so bucks I paid. One tip it did take me a good hour or 2 to fit it properly. Lots of dremel work to get the contours around the gauges correct, and the fit near the doors. Do alot of trial fitting before adding the silicone..

Regards
Graham

For that price and amount of work I say just hop on ebay and look for a used one in good shape.

We use a vinyl repair kit to repair school bus seats. If you take your time and get really good at it you can do a fairly good repair. However you still can see the repair job. And also we use vinyl paint to paint the entire area instead of trying to match the color exactly. What we use is a liquid vinyl which you heat to dry then press the grain pad on it while it's still hot. Maybe I should try it on my dash and report the outcome. Pics to follow. Wonder why i never thought of this before????

The kit I bought came from a US manufacturer, Repair - it, Barberton, Ohio 44203. Further assistance or info call (602) 465-0165. Never used it so can't comment on results. It includes 6 or so colours and a chart for mixing any colour combination.

before and after.

there's a slight 'wow' in the cap in the second and fourth pics.. that has since been fixed... just, as slam said, a little dremel or file or even an exacto knife work.

also, i have since redone the area around the center speaker... looks much better now.. but this gives you an idea at what a rushed job looks like - not half bad.

When my time comes, I'll opt for a new OE dash. Stopped at the local dealer, only about $850. Considering picking one up before they're out of production.

Hmm.. cheaper than I thought it would be.
This may be the first phase in updating my interior color.
