Play in 924S steering

Hi,

Had a bit more of a chance to look at my 924S at the weekend. It appears the steering column is loose! If you open the hood and put your hand near where the steering column goes through the bulkhead, you can push the shaft backwards and forwards a small ammount (relative to the car...).

The 'rack end appears to be solidly mounted, so I presume there is a bearing or something that needs replacing on the steering wheel end?

Can anybody reccomend what to look for?

Also - the movement only seems to be in and out, but it does go through an angle at the UJ. Could this play be causing a change in the steered angle and leading to the rather poor steering I'm seeing?

The steering coupler, with the two universal joints on it, sounds like your culprit. The U-joints get old and develop play. It's not too hard to fix and the coupler is fairly inexpensive, but you need fairly dexterous hands to get under the brake booster to get the top joint off. Make sure to remove the bolts holding the coupler to the steering shaft and rack completely. It's common to have the upper U-joint fail first because it operates at the most extreme angles.

I take it thats the shaft that runs between the rack and the bulkhead?

There isn't any movement in the lower part, its only rear of the last UJ (i.e the bit with the steering wheel on!) that appears to have any movment. Although I wouldn't rule out play elsewhere.

Will sort out the details on my profile, but I think I'm the wrong side of the atlantic!!

Not the wrong side - just the other! I was born in Hull.

Yes, it's the shaft between the shaft and bulkhead. Is there play in your steering wheel itself? Also, have a look at www.clarks-garage.com and do a search there.

I think the steering wheel is fixed onto the column ok. However, theres a small ammount of movement back and forth (...if you pull the wheel towards you)

If its the coupler, does that mean the steering column (or atleast the upper part going to the steering wheel) is normally free to move in and out?

Steering column (the shaft the steering wheel is mounded to) should not move fore and aft. Nor should the end of it wiggle about. Reports of the lower bearing either moving out of it's location or failing.

The steering link is the part that makes the bend to the steering rack. This is the part that has the pressed on u-joints. The upper u-joint is the first to show wear as it has the highest change in angle. You have to replace the entire link. To do this you have to drop the steering rack a few inches. You can leave the tie rods and power steering hoses connected. Remove the four bolts and the grounding wire for the horn.

Thats what I thought. Any ideas why the column might be moving? I presume theres a bearing or something that would normally restrict it.

Here is a bit clearer diagram. There is a keeper clip (item 20) behind the steering wheel and the turn signal switch mouning. This may have come loose.

Thanks, that looks like a good place to start.

Do you know if thats accesable, or do I have to start removing bits of the dash or anything to get to it?
