Uhmm its not nikasil ....it is alusil.
You dont apply a coating......... you actually etch the aluminum away from the silicum. The rings actually ride on the Crystals. When you hone.......like you would in a traditional bore you destroy the surface that the rings must seat into. So the process is pretty straight forward... You bore, you expose the crystals and you are done..... sounds easy enough. :D Not too many shops have the machine that is required to do this.... |
yeah a breakdown of the costs would help, I'm rebuilding My backup engine soon, wouldent hurt if i can aford it to do some of those upgrades too.

Yeah lucky for me... i had some teflon left over from when i recoated all my pans in the kitchen. I just used a little on the cylinder walls... they look really good and seem to be stick free.
|
thats a j/k the shop i found is in kirkland and they honed the cylinder walls the correct way. I think they were called percision engines... fordahl recommended.
|
Wasn't funny. Actually disrespectful. Okay, so you two have now made the thread boring. You can both go away now.
Jaime, there are a couple machine shops I talked to that do the job and they were both around the 900 dollar range. Not counting transportation to and from the shop. Alex, thanks for correcting my post, yes the process uses a silicium paste during the honing that actually takes away the aluminum instead of reapplying any type of coating as I incorrectly stated. Porsche does use both processes, however I'm having a hard time finding out which years of cars have which process. Evidence suggests that Porsche used Nikasil on the 87 to 89 but I don't know that for sure and maybe it was only on some engines, I just know there are 944 pistons for 87 to 89 Nikasil engines. I do know they copyrighted the Nikasil name and use it one some 911s especially from the late 80s on and alumisil on others prior to those years. I'm not sure I understood what you said about the boring process though. If you rebore the block, don't you still have to take it through the honing process with the paste to reetch the cylinder walls? Or is it just okay to bore it and leave it at that. |
the cylinders do have to be re-etched.
|
That's what Alex meant when he said "you expose". Okay, I thought that is what he meant. Thanks Nynor.

Any updates on your build? If you need any competent help let me know because I rebuilt a ford ranger motor a couple years ago. I guess you can call me an expert in the engine building field do to this experience.

yeah, and if I remember correctly, that facker blew all over the underside of your hood about two miles from the house! I told you that you had it in upside down, but nooooooo...

We have installed the crank and one of the balance shafts as well as got a lot of stuff figured out. Progress is speeding up, but here is the detailed pics of the build thus far. NEW TODAY!
ALL THE PICTURES OF THE PROGRESS ARE HERE: PORSCHE 944 BUILD BLOG The SEXIEST AC Delete bracket ever. http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4...4/DSCF0228.jpg http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4...4/DSCF0219.jpg http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4...4/DSCF0214.jpg http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4...4/DSCF0222.jpg |

Very cool thread! hope it all works out,
btw you could have Russel clean parts and stuff, in exchange for a cot to sleep on in the shop since his Mom kicked him out of his trailer:D |
Dave,
I already asked Chris if I could sleep on his shop floor, until this whole thing blows over with my mom, but he said absolutely not. Saying something about my conviction of indecent liberties with farm animals and what will the neighbors think. So I said fuch it and I'll just help out to be a nice guy, plus someone has to feed his sheep while he's out of town. |
Yeah you know how it goes.
Does anyone know the fitting size for the oil line to the oil cooler from the oil filter housing on a 951? 6AN, 8AN, 10AN???? Something other than that? I am trying to order some stainless lines and i havent recieved the oil cooler housing yet, so i dont know the size. |
10 AN

Do you keep the same torque specs on the ARP head bolts? Are you also installing ARP rod bolts?
|
i wish ... nope only head studs...
i havent researched that, but i believe that we will be using stock torque specs. On another note - I just got my cam tower, intake manifold, and distributor cap housing all powder coated and it LOOKS DAMN GOOD. Pics soon. |
Enough POWDER COATING PICTURES ALREADY!
I got a little trigger happy..... :) but its just that beautiful.
This set me back a grand total of $190.40 with a two day turn around. From: RMC 10766 myers way so. Seattle, Wa 98168 1-800-243-4831 206-243-4831 I need to do some work to polish the P O R S C H E script but its looks pretty good. The intake manifold has some ripples in the middle of the 2nd & 3rd passage way as well. I can live with it, i guess. ;) http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4...4/DSCF0236.jpg http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4...4/DSCF0235.jpg http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4...4/DSCF0237.jpg http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4...4/DSCF0238.jpg http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4...4/DSCF0241.jpg http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4...4/DSCF0240.jpg |
