Power steering
Hi!
Anyone have good pointers on changing my power steering fluid? The pump's making a god awful noise when it starts up, but the fuid level looks fine. I HAVE noticed bubbles in the fluid when the pump's running... which is why I'm changing the fluid and I'm worried about the pump itself. Is there a seal repair kit for the pump?? Thanks.

It sounds like a similar problem I am having, I have a small leak on the casting join of the pump, this lets in air when the car is not running.
I would check your pump and pipes for leaks and check where the air is getting in from. It looks like am going to strip my pump apart, so I would also like to know of a seal kit. When you change the power steering fluid, it will allowed air into the pump. To bled this out you have to turn the steering wheel from lock to lock with the engine running. The pump will make noise and the fliud will bubble as the air is being expeld. After a few mins the air should be beld out. |

Thanks for that... I was REALLY worried about the noise coming from the pump... but if it's the only way to get rid of the air, then so be it!

I haven't seen any seal kits at any online places. What you can do though is get the number written on the front of the seal and take it to a place like National Seal and they can give you a new one from the old seal number. Otherwise you will need to measure the outside diameter, width and shaft size and then call them and tell them it is for a hydraulic pump and they will be able to get you a seal based on that criteria. I'm not sure what is available in the UK, but I'm guessing pretty much the same thing that is available here. If you can't find one, then pm me the seal number or the dimensions and I'll check in Houston, I'm certain there is one here.

Having seen the pics on the links, I now know that my banjo bolt seals are Knacked. So I will order the pump seal kit + banjo bolt washers.
I plan to strip the pump in a couple of weeks once the kit arrives, will post my results. Many thanks. Hope your power fluid changes goes alright, be prepared for a lot of noise from the pump as the air bleeds out. I believe this wont cure your problem; air must be getting in from somewhere. |

Thanks very much for the links 'gas2.... only wish they were over here then shipping wouldn't be such a pain...
Considering that I've actually seen the fluid dripping from the front of the pump, think I'll have to go for a seal kit... but whether I'll get it here first or not....

To finish off the thread,
After one month the seal kit finally passed customs. The kit (from rennabay) comes with about ten seals, I only required the o ring that seals both halves of the pump casting (its a standard o ring seal), I bought the full kit because you do not know what will fall out once you open up the pump. With the pump opened up it is not obvious on how you dismantle the pump further. So if you are changing all the seals yourself, I would reconmend you do a bit more research. My pump is now running fine and with no leaks. |

If anyone is still having trouble with this we made a cool video of the install. Right click the link and choos "save target as" to download. Pass it around freely. We have one coming out for the rack as well in a few weeks.

hell with that.. does anyone know where to acquire the lower power steering bracket?? Mine was temporarily jb welded a few weeks before I bought it, and now the whole pump is just hanging there. Somehow it made a 50 mile trip back just fine.
p.p. here doesn't list the bracket. really, someone help me please.

Hey Aero...There have been others with that problem and I think they took theirs and had them welded. But if you need one, I can point you to a couple Porsche part recyclers that will probably have them. You would just have to call and see. Let me know.

Thanks razor. Mine was tack welded before I bought it already. I thought it was a quick JB weld job, but in daylight now it's definately a true weld. I found one on ebay with 2 days left. Turns out one of the biggest Porsche scrap yards is just up the road 100 miles. Can't beat that! Thanks again.
