2nd gear problem
I have been having a problem with second gear lately. Every once in a while it will grind second gear alittle bit. It only does this when I am up shifting from first gear. I thought that is might be that I didn't have the clutch all the way down, but that is not it. I make sure that the clutch is all the way on the floor and it has still grinded second gear a couple of times. I don't have time to take it apart right now since this is my only running car and I need it to get to work. What do you think could be wrong? I could always shift from first to third, that will fix the problem, just kidding.

I got that problem but worse for me its 3rd and 4th upshifting it grinds But if i take it up to 3k or a little more and shift slower it's no problem. Shifting down into 3rd or 4th no trick keeps it from grinding. i avoid shifting to those gears unless i realy need to.
Syncro(s) are bad or going bad, Wouldent hurt to flush the fluid and put new stuff in either

As Jaime said...it's the synchros doing that. My 86 did just what yours is for years before I took it and had it fixed but mine only did it when it was cold...after it was warm it was fine. Try double clutching to see if that makes a difference. I think Jaime also had an excellent suggestion of changing the transmission fluid...from what others have said that seems to help as well especially if you use synthetic.

Its grinding due to diferent inpu and output gear speeds, which would mean the synchromesh. Double clutch into the bad gear, and if thats the trouble, you shouldn't have any problems.
Basicly, with the clutch engaged, the input side of the shift is controlled by engine speed, so you pull it out of gear, match the RPM in neutral with clutch engaged, then push clutch in, and engage into the net gear, release.

Second gear is losing the synchro...
I've seen this issue on quite a few other cars. Basically, instead of shifting super-quick from first to second, ease it into second gear, give it a moment for what's left of the synchros to line the gear up and then put it in. You cand erive all the innuendo you want from that, it's unintentional.

Yeah, my 2nd syncro is worn too. Mechanic friend of mine recommended MTL 75/90. Anyone try this?

I bought my car with the 2nd gear problem also, it would grind all the time trying to do the 1-2 shift, car had 60k miles. I switched the transmission fluid to Redline Synthetic, i forget which weight i used. The switch to redline defenetley helped, however the problem still is present. I usually granny shift the 1-2 shift or double clutch when the tranny is cold. Once the tranny warms up its not as evident, although still have a fair amount of resistance before the gear will engage.
A pain in the butt, but i can live with it. One day ill find a nice LSD equipped tranny to rebuild.. ![]()

this might be a silly question, but where are the synchros located? are they physically in the transmission? how hard would it be to repair them?

Yes, they are inside the transmissions on the gear shafts. Very time consuming repair....but Greenwater as you can see there are a lot of us that just drive them like that for quite a while. Of course with each shift a little more gear is ground off but they will need to be replaced if you ever rebuild it anyway.

Hmm... I thought synchros and seals were cheap? Of course... synchros when I last bought 'em were $50-$80/ea in cherry used or new shape.
