Poor oil pan gasket install?
What the hell happened here? I tied this in place, I torqued it to spec, but it looks like it went awry. I didn't notice the problem until I installed the flywheel. I suppose this is not ideal, correct?
Should I pull it off and try it again? I guess better on the stand than when in the car and buttoned up. I'm beginning to hate this car. ![]() ![]()

Steve, I'm guessing you are looking at the gasket sticking out further on the corners. I think it will seal okay.

Yeah it's just touching the flywheel (slightly). Certainly it will rub off in a couple of minutes, but would rather not find out it's a problem when its back in the car.

If you are worried, take a scalpel or retractor knife and cut the excess on the outside away. I don't think I would be concerned at all.

I have found that it takes about 5 or six passes on the bolts when tightening the pan. Start at the middle and make two passes just finger tightening. Then make a couple of more passes with light pressure on the ratchet and wrench. Finally torque. If you try to use fewer passes, my experience has been that the gasket gets pushed out on the corners as your photo shows. Much easier on a stand with the engine inverted. Then you don't have to worry with the dental floss.

Oil pan gaskets are supposed to go on dry except for sealant in the corners where it goes around the oil pump and the rear main.
Steven makes and sells oil pan gasket retainers that keep the gasket from bulging out. I will never replace another oil pan gasket without using these retainers. I do not have a picture handy but you can reach Steven here: steven.wistuba@ypg.com.

I just took this photo to a shop when I was dropping off my injectors. He said it is supposed to go on dry and the RTV makes it too slipperly. So I'll be doing it over.

If you are going to do it over..probably best to use the procedure jwade outlined. You will probably get a little better results.

Yes, the sealant allows the gasket to slide. It should go on dry, except as previously stated, on the corners. If you pull it and clean the gasket off you should be ok.
