Clutch Housing Removal

I freely admit now to being completely humbled by work on my 944. I once thought myself mechanically inclined, but now I know better. I'm hoping that the Porsche Gods will now take mercy on me...

I finally got the pin removed from the clutch housing. In fact, now the housing hangs freely from the ring gear. No matter how much I seem to wiggle it I can't get enough room between the housing and the firewall to slip the housing off the back of the engine. I've allowed the engine to sit as low as it will go and still can't seem to get enough room to slip it off. All of the instructions just say "slip the housing off the back of the engine". What am I doing wrong?

I think the service manual says to unbolt the motor mounts, but a large prybar in the right spot will move the engine over enough to clear without unbolting them.

i found if you remove the reference sensor housing bracket it will come off...or jack the front of the motor up a bit allowing the back to drop enough to remove the housing

^ This is what I did to pivot the engine and allow the bellhousing to come off.

Got to work on my 944 again this weekend. In anticipation of new timing belt and other engine work I bought an engine lift. This is probably the hard way for the clutch housing...but removed the exhaust manifold, loosened the engine mount bolts and raised the engine slightly. The clutch housing dropped right off the back (only to find that I had forgotten one of the wires mounted on the housing. Had to fiddle around getting the housing back in a position where I could remove the wire. Oh well, at least the housing is off. Will remove the clutch plate this weekend.

I might pull the engine out the top this weekend. I read on all the posts on engine removal. I'm forced out the top or buying taller jack-stands to get the necessary clearance out the bottom.

My gas tank is back and repaired. waiting on fuel line and vacuum hose to put it back in. Will be nice to actually put something new on the car soon.
