conversion to manual steering
I'm loving the handling of my car but the steering feel is pretty bad with the power steering. I've seen mention of people converting to earlier manual steering and I wonder what this entails. Would I keep the later control arms? Is it simply a matter of taking off the power steering pump and rack and bolting in an older rack, or do I need more parts, like tie rods etc etc? I am accustomed to manual steering in my datsuns and as I'm a pretty burly fella, the extra effort isn't a concern. Any experience or comments on this would be appreciated, as well as any good leads on parts sources for the conversion.

Converting to manual steering is my next project on my 88 NA.
I've just started my research but I believe you need the manual rack, the arms, tie rods, AND the steering shaft. There is a kit that runs about $900 which includes everything. I've seen kits of used parts running about $400. Personally, I would love to save the weight of the power setup, and get rid of the source of leaks :-) The sharper steering is going to be a side benefit. |
Here's previous post
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-924-944-968-technical-forum/260659-power-manual-steering-conversion.html Think it covers it. My PS without the P is still running great for Daily to DE's. Tight parking is still way easier than an old Z, but not the one handed PS with coffee and Cell phone open approach. |
control arms need to be replaced too?

A Arms don't need replacing for steering conversions. But If you decide to take it all apart and it hasn't been replaced, I'd get new Ball joints and replace your A-Arm Bushings with some nice Urethane for Strong Street/track car with better steering response. Think you can get that all from Paragon for about $300.
FYI Lot's of guys like the early A-Arms cause under excess crash type stress, they bend and don't snap, thus giving you some control before stopping. Pelican has some good right ups on rebuilding your A-Arms for crisp steering. |
I picked up a slightly used manual rack for 200 bucks - needs control arms though. If I can locate another one, I'll do the same for my 951.
Power steering is for sissies. Good only for making gooey undersides of otherwise clean Porsches. |
