Question Steering Wheel Diameter

Anyone know the stock diameter of steering wheel on '86 Turbo?

I know my '86 NA is roughly 320mm and I can't think of any reason why the turbo's would be any different. I suppose it depends on where you take the measurment from though. Inside diameter, outside..or centerline.

I'm planning to swap the stock four-spoke out for one of the Momo's with a 280mm diameter. Maybe then my thigh will fit between the wheel and the center console. As it is right now it's a little hard to drive.

Anyone out there installed a wheel that's close to this diameter? Thoughts on how much it affected the amount of force required to turn the wheel?

I have the same problem with space. I also want a smaller wheel for better driving performance. The stock wheel is too sedan-like. I think it is the worst part of the 944's interior.

Yeah, there's a thread on the 911 board about installing that wheel. Is it smaller diameter than the stock four-spoke though?

I like the 930 wheel better. Let's see....14" = ~355mm. Bigger than the stock four spoke.

Damn.

Of those of you that are going to go with an agtermarket wheel, what are you going to do with your old one ? Cosmetics are the last thing that I am going to be working on, and my stock wheel is not in that good of shape. I am willing to take it off your hands for the cost of shipping, if anyone wants to hook me up. Just send me an e-mail.

I think the stock wheel is like 15" in diameter.

I'll check tonight when I get home. Surely the 930 wheel is smaller and thicker.

Cool

Thats the steering wheel that they used in the latest Excellence Magazine article about upgrading to White Gage faces. Seems a bit pricy though.

Question

Did you get a chance to measure the stock wheel?

Yes. Sorry I didn't get home from work until about 11:00pm last night. Just measured the stock wheel - 15" exactly from the outer edge to the outer edge.

By the way, here is a conversion calculator:

Red face

Looks like I was a little off on the stock wheel size then...15 inches is 381mm (25.4mm/inch). Thanks for checking.

ESG,
I know what you mean...the stock four spoke in my car is slightly out of round. I have just enough clearance for my knee when driving in a straight line but when I turn (right especially) the wheel contacts my leg. Not so good if it's a decreasing radius turn and my fingers are in the way.

Does anyone know if Momo sells spacers to get the wheel a little closer? I've got the seat all the way back and also tipped back quite a ways so that my head doesn't hit the roof. A spacer that moves the wheel and inch or two closer would be much more comfortable. Or does the adapter hub move the wheel further aft?

I thought you had to use a hub adapter to go to MOMO wheel? I just bought a cheaper wheel from E-Bay, new. Haven't got it yet. The hub adapter was $65 +shipping. Thought I had to have it for fit? I'll probably order a spacer later if Momo wheel isn't closer than factory. I think they're about $20.

I went with a Momo Tuner this time. It's 350mm (13.8 in). Had a Deno on my last 944 N/A when I bought the car. It was white leather (white car) and the color wore off. The darker colors would probably do better.

I would like to find a momo horn button with the Porsche crest for a reasonable price. My old 944 had one when I got the car. The ones I've seen online are about $60. Seems kinda high for a plastic disk.

My wheel is also looking worn and I like the look of the Momo. If one of you install one could you post what parts are needed (adapter?) and level of difficulty.
