Tranny vs. torque tube--source of noise?

Okay, so I've got the tranny and the torque tube out and on the floor. I was getting a rattling noise under acceleration at slow speeds. While I've got the t.t. out, I'll rebuild it, but it's turning freely without making any noise or vibration. Could it still be the source of the noise? What should the transmission feel like? It's a little loose when I turn it with my hand. Could it be the source of my noise? I read a thread once that said the "ring and pinion" could make a rattle when it's going. I know squat about transmissions, BTW--well, I know it'll break the bank if I have to get this rebuilt. The trans. was in neutral when I pulled it. Any experienced hands out there?
