Project Update Part V - Megasquirt 944 Turbo We Have Power !!

Part IV

Well........ the weather has been good and hockey has been on! (Go OILERS GO)......... so I had not had much time to play with the car or update my progress.

BUT I have been driving it to work daily.

I managed to tune the AFR's last week........and with the help of JustinL ... he logged.... I drove.... we began to set timing values.

The AFR's were pretty much dead on and idle has been rock solid. Cold and hot start are hit and miss but it may be partly due to a bad coolant temp sender that we diagnosed by logging!.

Anyways we began to play with timing. The weirdest thing we discovered........as we advance timing we had less power and as we pulled timing back........ the more power we had. SOMETHING WAS OFF.

Too make a long story short. We had the trigger wheel 180 degrees off. Took a couple of hours and flipped the trigger wheel........... and now we had proper timing response.

I verified TDC and set megasquirt at 0 to be TDC. Set some baseline timing values and off we went.

After a number of runs we managed to flatten out some little blips. We have it almost dead on upto 11 psi. Now we will concentrate on the last 4 psi.

The funny thing is we noticed the clutch slipping (OOOPPS forgot to adjust the clutch pedal! Clutch engaged while driving) Too many things to remember in projects like this!

A few minutes to adjust that and now we have strong pulls in all the gears!. We have left a few degrees of timing on the table.......but let me tell you its no slouch.

Car is starting to make some power.

Megasquirt has some great logging features. The ease of tuneability is phenomenal. We will have some screen shots of the logs for the next update.

Here is another engine pick taken this morning.......

Cool project. I saw your story on the megasquirt BBS as well. I am thinking of going megasquirt on the lt1 V-8 project after seeing a guys megasquirt 95 Ford Mustang Cobra Turbo conversion. It was way cool.

Good work and keep us posted.
