Find a way to run two radiators a-la 996/997.

Or the cheaper route: Find what is causing your high temps. Is the radiator blocked up with road grime? Is your thermostat not opening fully? Are you not running a proper blend of water/antifreeze?

That is a good temp at 2 bar. Normal. But to answer the question not much w/o some cash. 951 rad will help however and will fit with a different bracket. Try Water Wetter, some like it some don't but it did reduce temps in mine.

How do you know it is actually running hot? The gauge is not the proof.
2 bar? Bar is a pressure reading, used for the oil pressure gauge.

If the fans operate, there is no coolant loss and engine operates normally, you do not have a problem. Check the radiator temp and make sure the core is equally hot..if not it's probably partially blocked.

Unless you know and can prove there is a problem, there isn't one.

There are two different thermostats you can get for the 944. One has a lower temp. The lower temp one is the one I use here in Texas and my temp gage hangs around the first line on the temp gage. Here is a link so you can see it. I'm sure you can get it anywhere.

mine will run to the second marking in heavy traffic. It will also be closer to the 1st mark when crusing at highway speed. This is with new coolant, waterpump and thermostat. Unlike other cars where the needle never ever moves from dead centre the 944's seems to actually reflect the coolants temperature.

The best thing to do is change the temp sensor in the radiator to one that will kick the fans on sooner. I, like Britwrench, don't think you have a problem.

A cold engine will wear quicker and is not as efficient as an engine that is running at the correct operating temp. I found that city - stop start driving increases my temp so that the fans come on, whilst freeway driving seems to be sufficient - the fans do not come on.

Yes. Definately leave the stock thermostat in place. I know some turbo guys have removed the thermostat altogether to enhance coolant flow, but thats not a good idea under most conditions.

Just change the thermo-temp switch that screws into the radiator and the fans will kick on sooner.

The 944 (in my case 87 924S) temp guage reading is one of the most informational (sensitive?) of any car I have driven. I own an 89 Toyota and sans a bit of warming up in the first wo minutes of driving, the needle never moves from near dead center guage. I can run the thing way hooter and the needle with only move a millimeter. (Well, maybe my toyota temp sensor is bad, but my other cars have been the same way) My Porsche on the other hand actually shows some readout. If I park the car with the engine idleing after highway driving, the temp will start to rise (no airflow...) and then the fans kick on and bam... it falls back down. I like that.

And I agree, if your guage is not getting near the red, you fans are working, and you arent leaking coolant or using it up a lot.. you dont need any extra cooling.

I just got the parts in the other day for a cheap lower-temp engine. 182(?) degree thermostat, lower temp fan switch (matched with to 182), a bottle of prestone coolant flush, a small bottle of treatment, and 1 bottle of water wetter.

The flush is a one-time 10 minute additive to break up old rust and corrosion. After the flush, in goes the treatment and water wetter. I personally just use prestone anti-rust, as it does a good job at keeping everything clean, it's cheap, and there's not much mass to add in.

Normally, an old car getting a full, proper, system flush will work wonders. It gets brutally hot around here with the humidity factor and our city streets get very congested very quickly, so it takes no time at all to get running hot.

I'll let you know how it works out next week.

I disagree with running the stock thermostat but a lower temperature sensor for the fans. What happens in that configuration is the thermostat starts to close to raise the temperature to the higher temp it's set for and the fans are already on to lower it back down and the two end up working against each other. If you put a lower temperature sensor for the fans in, put the matching temperature thermostat. But you do want to make sure a thermostat is in there.

I tried a lower temp thermostat, and water wetter. the biggest thing is to make sure that your radiator and ac condensor are clean and have good air flow going through them, straiten any bent fins. if your radiator is clean inside and out, and the fins on the condensor are straight you shouldn't need all that other *****.

^ again, you'd want to match the fan switch accordingly, though.

I had this happen to me I tried:
1) new radiator cap
2) new temp sender
3) new fan switch
4) up grade to twin fans
5) put barrier between bottom of radiator to force air flow trough the radiator.
After all this it still ran between middle and hot when the fans come on it cools very quickly but just heats back up and tends to run between fans and cold. While on the highway needle stays on the first mark until I hit traffic again.
6) Took it to a dealer and had the mech check it with a IR temp gauge and the results were, ALLS WELL fans come on when they supposed to.
As Shumi pointed out these gauges tell you the correct temp including all the fluctuations.
My 2cents take it to someone with a IR temp sensor run it till the fans come on then check the temp. After 3 years I still get nervouse when the gauge reads high even though I know its not overheating.

In mine I put in the low temp thermostat, low temp fan switch, and added some water wetter. Helped quite a lot.

Here's my list:
  • lower temp thermastat
  • lower temp fan switch
  • watter wetter
  • Had a bra, ran fine around city, but mountain driving would make it overhead quickly. I guess that mesh blocked just enough air flow
  • degreas radiator (the fins, man)

It ran just above the first line on my '84
