I may have found a cure!

Most of us have this nice little exhaust smell entering the cabin with window(s) down. Well mine does and by accident I noticed where the air is entering. For mine it comes in right in front of my left shoulder. I placed my hand while driving in the area between the A pillar and the mirror. When in the seat it will look like a triangle for air. So if the space referred to is covered from the pillar to the top of the mirror the air is now pushed out and around the mirror and the air entering into the cabin dropped dramatically. So did the smell. Now someone who can fabricate a shroud to cover this may be the ticket. Getting it to look good maybe another issue.

Give this a shot and see if it has any effect in your car!

Iv'e noticed that also. Only question is, that air is coming from the front of the car not the rear, how is the exhaust getting in that way?

could be the fuel smell from the charcoal canister.

I put my hand there intentionally while driving to push MORE air into the car on those hot days (ac broken).

I believe that air is being pushed forward from the rear bringing the exhaust with it. Air from the front is entering the window sucking the exhaust in with it.

The vents around the rear hatch feed into the side body cavities. The side cavity below the A pillar feeds into the door. The door vents to the outside at the hinges. This is a low pressure (suction area). Should your tail light lens and/or hatch not seal you will get exhaust smells into the car.

Fuel oders come from a leaking fuel rail/injectors and/or a punctured or leaking fuel tank and filler tube. Leaking fuel rails are rather obvious. Leaking fuel tanks can be hard to figure out. If a speaker/power amp has been screwed to the rear cargo area most likely you have holes in the gas tank that sits right below the cargo shelf. The filler tube vent will leak at the flex hose between the filler tube assembly and the flange on the fuel tank. This can be inspected and fixed by removing the bulging cover. A quick fix for the 45 degree bent hose is to cut it and insert a short length of copper tubing then clamp the hose in four places. Some have found the top of the tank to be cracked. This requires the removal of the trans then the gas tank to access the damaged area.
