Painting an 8v cam cover
My valve/cam cover hasn't aged all that well. The metal is rather yellowed and fluid has hit it at high temperature before and not cleaned off, leaving tarnishing. I have been wanting to paint it for a while now but from what I can tell removal is a long process.
I did a search and found a few posts on replacing the cover gasket and most said that removal of the distrib cap and the timing belt was neccesary. I do not want to do this as I don't have a tensioner tool. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do? I was just thinking of a tarnish remover applied to is and polish the visible surfaces with a rag to restore some shine. But the tarnish removers I have around are acid based I belive and I don't know if this would remove a finish and cause rusting later on? (I'm not sure the the cover is casted steel or aluminum?) I have also though about masking off just the top exposed area and covering it with some high heat silver. Not sure how this would turn out. Any suggestions?

When you remove the cam cover does the roller and everyting come with it? I see your one picture of the underside of the cover- I thought it was just a hollow housing over the cams, but I see that it is more complex than that.

I understand now. I definately can't do this with the tools I have here. I will end up with blowing my timing.
I guess I'll save this project for down the road.....

I did mine at the same time the blcok was out for a new crank. I had it glass bead blasted and the used 240 the 600 sandpaper on the letters. I then had it powder coated and the sanded the finish off the letters. I did the fuel rail at the same time and in the same color.
I also had the intake blasted and just high temp clear coated it. I had MSDS ceramic coat the header It looks pretty good back together in the car Steve 84 944 "Schrittkind mit dem roten haar" 98 M3 91 C4 00 Durango 06 Aprilia |
