Would a bad clutch stop the car from at least starting? thanks in advance

Theoretically it could have blown out the center and not dis-engage. The starter would then try to crank, but if the brakes are on the engine wouldn't be able to turn over. It would be like starting without putting your foot on the clutch. Should still be able to start in neutral though.

thank you. cause i'm buying an 83 944 on sunday for $500.00 and the guy says it won't start cause the clutch master cylinder needs replaced. I thought that was kinda funny since my 84 944 will start without the clutch engaged. I'm gonna buy it anyways.. seems like it'd be a good project. besides, i have a smashed parts car i can use the clutch out of if it does need replaced.
