Intakes are bigger than exhausts.

Hey CJ is that small gap between the Intake and Exhaust valve smooth or bumpy. I used a degreeser on my head to get rid of the carbon and after sitting it looked like it had eaten the carbon and turned into a scaley foam. If you're is a lil pitted then im kool, if not that i guess that scale was the aluminum being removed by the degreeser.

Why is that valve so clean looking? New? Looks like a new one just installed.

Gloves? Whenever I have to work on my car, the gloves come off... So to speak.
It's an intake valve.

Well, I am sending out the head to get machined/cleaned and possibly ported (with a new intake valve, of course). I think whatever process the shop has to clean the head would be much more effective than toothbrush/degreaser

Yes that is a intake valve. Yes the shop will have a very good way of cleaning them, usually a hot bath of some really really crazy chemicals. It will come back to you lookin brand new ;-) A nice Port and polish should help alot too since the head is one of the biggest restrictions with making power on these engines

Would you recommend replacing the valve springs as well?

What makes you think that only one valve is bent?

Well Id get new springs if you were getting a cam that required it. Other than that I dont see much point unless youre going to be revving like a maniac. Obviously you dont want to float valves in the '44s

You will float valves should you go over the rev limiter or about 7,200 rpm. Usually happens on a down shift.

Hugh - I am not positive that only one valve is bent. Only one valve APPEARS to be bent. I suppose I will find out once I bring the head to a shop to be machined/resurfaced/cleaned.

CJ...just for future reference, you can look in the intake hole and see a valve stem...that will be the intake valve. If you look in the exhaust port, you'll see the other valve stem...of course that will be the exhaust valve. That's the easiest way to tell the difference.
I think the valve spring question depends on how you drive your car. For the car I'm working on....well let's just say she better not float a valve. If you plan to autox, then maybe something to consider but there are a lot of people here that drive them daily with no problems....just don't overrev the engine and the springs you have should be fine as long as they are in spec which they probably are. The machine shop should let you know if they are not.

"Take" the head NOT "bring".
You take it there and bring it here. Examples: Take the head with you. Take the head to the machine shop. Bring the head when you come over to my machine shop. Did you bring the head with you? Did you take the head with you? (The two sentences above is one of few exceptions where both words can be used. Or is it. The first sentence is used at the destination, the second as a question anywhere but at the destination.) Don't get me started on "got".

I don't get you, SoCal. This is a car forum, not the grammar police. Save that stuff for the "Eats, Shoots & Leaves" fan forum. I hold a BA in English and will have completed a Master's in English within the year. I save my formal writing for the 70+ page theses that I have to write twice a year. Forgive me for thinking I can write informally on an automotive technical forum.
So, pray tell, what is the purpose of pointing out bad grammar when it has nothing to do with the topic of a thread? To attempt to impress people? To make others feel bad? Your help in the automotive field is much appreciated, Hugh, but please save me the lectures.

Oh geesh! A BA in English! You should know better. Then the deplorable state of the education system could be to blame. Then maybe not.
