Take the cover off of the top of the headlight linkage motor and turn the knob. Keep your fingers clear of the linkage. If you can raise and lower the headlights by hand then the gear reduction is intact. Note that at some point the motor may take over and lower the headlights. If it does not then the circular contacts and strips under the cover are dirty and/or corroded. Have to take the cover off where the relay mounts on and clean the contacts and strips. Disconnect the battery first.

There should be rubber slip covers over the entire motor including the relay and plug. If not then water is getting into the unit.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

so SoCal, with my lights down (and switch off) if i turn that knob 2 or 3 turns, it's normal for the motor to take over and raise then lower automatically?

did it the other day and it caught me off guard..

The motor does work.....I actually put a momentary switch in line so I can raise and lower them electrically but I can't get them to work with the stock set up.....I'm convinced that there is another relay hiding out some where......

I removed the relay from the moter and found the 12 volt pin...and wired that to a small switch then to a known hot lead...the moter will cycle the doors up and down...you just have to stop them at the correct time.....

What year is this? Please go to your User CP and add it to your signiture.

As the motor and relay for all the 924's, 944's, 951's, 924S's are the same, the same logic exists in all. Two wires feed the logic (power) to raise and lower the headlights. These two wires rely on the cicular contacts under the plate where the relay and wire connector mount to tell the relay when to switch the power on/off. The motor mounted relay does all the heavy switching.

The red/green wire is hot with the light switch off. This is what closes the headlights. The gray wire is hot only when the headlights are on. This is on a seperate circuit than the head lights. These wires are never hot at the same time. The r/gn wire "breaks" when the parking lights are turned on. This is called "break before make" in industrial controls.

If you are using either of these two wires to power the headlight motor you are going to burn out the circular contacts.

This is the electrical diagram of the light switch and headlight motor for an 84 from Pelican:

i pulled into my driveway the other night and attempted to flip down the lights... and they got stuck.. they acted as if the switch didn't work until i gave the hood a little nudge and they went down fine.. hasn't done it since..

so maybe they're just getting stuck? then with the hood open they dont get stuck? who knows...

greasing them from time to time helps to prevent that.

K-Y is water soluble. Use a teflon or graphite in a solvent carrior. The solvent evaporates quickly leaving the teflon/graphite.

Back at the right thread......

OK guys...there is a relay uder the dash mounted towards the top....I can hear it click when I try to cycle the lights.....the relay is black and is double in size....that is, it looks like two relays in one long housing....it has two sets of wires going to each side.....any ideas???????

Cycle the lights...( turn the headlights on and off)

That long relay you refer to actually is two relays in one housing. It is the fog light MAKE contact (NO contact) and BREAK contact (NC contact). I was just researching this last night to see if I could use a couple of inexpensive ISO form C automotive relays instead of the expensive/special Porsche part. You can.
