Heater Control Valve install 1983 -944

Recently purchased 944, put new heater control valve in with the clip to fasten/anchor this end of a new bowden cable. The other end of bowden cable connects to slider/temperature control in dash which has been connected. Need help with this part of install as have been unable to get at the back of dash controls to anchor bowden cable on this end. Without fastening the outside of the new cable with a clip or something, the control will not to open & close the new valve from the dash. What have I missed?

have a couple cable clips for the job and cover the window on the bellhousing by the speed and reference sensors so if a clip pops off it does not fall in the bellhousing. also have a pencil magnet and long needle nose pliers. but most of all patience it is a pain in the azz job.
