brake pad install

I'm doin the brakes on my '88 924s, and I've got my old front pads out, and some new ceramic pads (Metal Master or Ultimate?- dont have them with me) ready to install. My problem is the rectangular nub located on the caliper which sits in the slot on the BACK of the OUTER pad doesn't line up- it hits the back of the pad. I can't refer to the old pads either because they were installed incorrectly. What the duce is goin on there?

Aside from that, the passenger side piston sits slightly askew; should I pump the brakes until it comes out far enough to compress it evenly, or is there a bigger problem?

Thanks as always
-Gabe

The rectangle piece sits into the pad, sometimes it takes some figiting. Make sure you are using the correct fron/rear pads, they vary slightly. With the calipers all the way extended they do tend to sit funny, With the pads in and the pins installed correctly the calipers should sit square. Try lifting up on the outside of the caliper to get the pad to seat, if not then check to make sure you have the right pads and that the caliper is put togeather corretly. The outside is suppsed to slide in a grove on the piston half, it may not be seated properly in that either. Good Luck!

You may be able to "wiggle" the two caliper sides up and down to get them lined up so the knotch goes in the square.

Besides prying the piston open with a large screw driver or two, the only problem I've ever encountered is getting the first pad onto the retaining/alignment "pins". Once there the other pad just slides in. There have been a few times when the pressure spring has flipped off to the other side of the garage.
